Advice for Freshman at Texas State University in San Marcos

There's More to Campus Than Just the River

Megan Ally
I'm a junior at Texas State University, and I wish that I could have gotten some advice and pointers before my freshman year. They say college should be the best years of your life, so I'm going to give you a few pointers to help you adjust to life at Texas State.

My biggest piece of advice is to get involved in some kind of organization on campus. One way to get involved is by joining a sorority or fraternity. The percentage of students involved in Greek organizations at Texas State isn't very high, but it's a great group of men and women that you can make lifelong friends with. I joined a sorority my sophomore year, and I can honestly say it was the best decision I've ever made. If Greek life isn't your cup of tea, that's not a problem. Another student organization that I recommend is Residence Hall Association. RHA oversees the hall councils at the residence halls around campus and is very active on campus. I was a member of RHA and hall council my sophomore year. Hall councils and RHA are the organizations that are responsible for making the rules in the residence halls such as visitation hours and quiet hours. They also put on programs in the hall with the help of the resident assistants. RHA and Greek organizations are just two of the many student organizations available at Texas State, and you're sure to find somewhere you will fit in.

Everyone loves eating a good meal, so I'm also going to share with you my two favorite restaurants in San Marcos near Texas State University. My absolute favorite place to eat in San Marcos is Grin's. They have the best burgers I have ever eaten. Also, they offer student specials if you have your Texas State student ID. Grin's is located off of North LBJ Drive near the Texas State campus. I also love Garcia's in San Marcos. They have really good Mexican food and it's very affordable. Their chips and salsa are addicting! There's always a crowd at Garcia's so get there a little early to get your name on the list. Unfortunately, they are closed on Mondays. Garcia's is located off of South LBJ near Texas State University.

I hope your first year at Texas State University is a great one! Study hard but don't forget to hit up the San Marcos River in your spare time!
