Advice for Successful Fashion Blogging

Missy Slink
The online world of blogging is one that is not well understood by many. The "success" of some blogs is hard to comprehend when considering their subject matter; additionally, some question why anyone would ever want to publish their personal thoughts in a manner that is free for all to read. However, the popularity of certain blogs is undeniable, as evidenced by their numbers of "followers"-those who subscribe to that blog. While it is true that some use blogging to simply unload all of their personal musings on anyone in the internet world who may lend a sympathetic "ear," others have seen the potential of blogging as much more than just an online diary of sorts. Aspiring authors are using blogs to gather up a fan base that will willingly receive their first published literary masterpiece while musicians are using blogs to keep their loyal crowds updated on the whereabouts of the band. The fashion industry also has not failed to see that blogging is a great way to communicate; fashion blogs are rising in popularity, with some blogs picking up fans much quicker than others. To succeed in the world of fashion blogging one must combine both business skills with general fashionable creativity. Here are some ways to do just that.

While the desire to showcase a huge variety of fashions (vintage, business, athletic, etc.) may be tempting, it is generally in a blogger's best interest to limit the focus of a blog to just one style. A more loyal fan base can be built this way; specificity can be a blogger's best friend when gaining "followers." This is not to say that you should only showcase strictly one style of outfits on your blog; if you have your own unique style that is a combination of several different styles, then showcase that style. The important factor here is that there is an apparent focus to the fashion blog, whether it is a strictly defined conventional fashion style or your own unique taste.

Additionally, besides having an attractive layout, most fashion blogs use their appearance to convey much more than just general aesthetic pleasure. A fashion blog's appearance should complement the general fashion trends highlighted by the blogger. For example, a vintage fashion blog should have a lighter colored background, or perhaps one with a collage of more vintage styled photographs. Similarly, a more urban fashion blog might want to employ a dark black background or a skyline montage.

Finally, many successful fashion blogs have chosen to operate as small businesses as well as fashion blogs. For most, this simply means offering their followers some of the outfits that they showcase in their blogs for sale. This approach seems most successful for those bloggers that find most of their outfits or accessories at vintage or second hand shops-all places where the clothing tends to be fairly unique. Fashion blogs that offer their followers the opportunity to purchase outfits see great success in keeping their fans; not only are these fans looking to the blogger for fashionable insight, but they are also seeking out possible shopping opportunities for themselves.
