Advice for Those Wanting to Become Mortgage Brokers

Logan Banner
I was having a conversation with one of buddies that is in the mortgage industry. We were at a local pizza buffet just shooting the breeze, talking about the first time we decided to become mortgage brokers. During the conversation, he begin to tell me about a young man that was looking to get into the mortgage industry. Now this guy's current occupation was nowhere near the mortgage industry, but he saw the success of people he knew in the industry and asked what he should do to get started. So my friend turned around and asked me the same question. "What advice would you give to someone that wants to become a mortgage broker, what are some of the things you would tell them to do." In this article, I want to give you some advice if you want to become a mortgage broker. Here it goes.

Learn All That You Can First

The first thing I would tell those wanting to get into a career as a mortgage broker is learn everything that you can about the industry and the process first. Most people that come into this industry don't have a clue about what they are getting into. If you really want to do well in this industry, First learn the entire mortgage process. Learning the entire process will make light years ahead of others who do not know the process. This is what usually happens. Someone who is new to the industry goes to their nearest brokerage firm and the ask for a position. The first thing they ask is do you know the mortgage process or do you have experience. If you know nothing about the industry, most of the time their answer is no. Not knowing the entire mortgage process will influence the mortgage company's decision on whether they should hire you or not. Some of the best ways to learn the entire process is looking over some one's shoulder as they explain to you everything you need to know. This can either be done by books, tutorials, or my favorite, videos. I would prefer that you use videos. With videos, you can see exactly what that person is doing.

Get Some Experience

The second piece of advice I would give to someone wanting to become a broker is to get experience. After you learn the entire process, you need to find someone who will give you a job in the field, so that you can get some experience. As a new broker, you do not want to try to go to the big companies first to try to get a job, I can promise you this, they will turn you down in a heart beat. If you want to gain experience, you need to go to what I call the mom and pop shops of the mortgage industry. These are people who are not big names, but they know a lot about the industry and have started their own brokerage firm. A majority of the time, these people use to be in the same boat that you are in, so they would be more than happy to give you a shot and let you gain the experience that you are desiring. Your goal is to stay with this kind of company for at least 2 years.

Move On

After you have worked for the company for a couple of years, it might be time for you to move on to bigger and better things. You can do this two ways. You can either go and apply to major mortgage companies or start one of your own. Moving to a more a reputable company has many advantages. One advantage is that more people know about the companies that are major, so that means more exposure for you and it also means more clients. You can also start you own mortgage company. In most states, it takes at least 2-3 years to open up you own mortgage company. All you need is the experience and once you have that the sky is the limit for you.

There you have it. That's my advice for those wanting to get into the mortgage field. I wish you much success in your new career choice.
