AFAR is the First Magazine Devoted to Experiential Travel

The newest travel magazine that launched during one of America's worst economic times is stunning travelers and other media sources with what seems to be just what people were looking for. AFAR magazine is more than just another travel magazine and their website is more than just a copy of the magazine. CEO and founder Greg Sullivan and his team have put together an entire package dedicated to experiential travel.

What is experiential travel?

Unlike escape travel or adventure travel, experiential travel is where the traveler tries to understand a culture and people at a different level, to get to the true essence of a place. It's volunteering, slowing down and talking to people, experiencing them and culture they live in at their level.

What others are saying

New York Post commented on the magazine saying, "A cover story on Morocco's Berbers goes beyond tea-drinking and carpets to confront some tough truths about their lives. We like the vignettes on Chinese rock bands, snorkeling in Welsh peat bogs and environmentalist vacation trips. A piece on Venezuela seems to signal this magazine isn't part of the US machine -- what's next, Nigeria, Pakistan? In any case, Afar -- which is due to hit the newsstands next week -- is just what the doctor ordered to get us interested in traveling again."

AFAR magazine is not a travel guide, but an inspirational guide and they have the whole package. The website will eventually be more like a social network. Allowing visitors to talk to people that live or have visited the places you want to go. Your experiential travel will begin before you even go by communicating with others that have the same travel desires that you do.

The Future of AFAR

AFAR Media's mission statement says, "Our mission is to inspire and guide those who travel the world seeking to connect with its people, experience their culture, and understand their perspectives." Currently individuals have to meet through other social media via an AFAR page, such as their Facebook page. AFAR has plans to launch their own social network in the form of a bulletin board type of system and when this full package comes together, they'll have a traveling and cultural exploring business model like no other.
