Affirmative Action Bake Sales

LL
Ever heard of an affirmative action bake sale? Well, if you're lucky you will never witness one on your campus. There was one at my school a couple of years back, before I entered, and it caused quite the stir.

Basically, at these bake sales they charge you different prices according to your race. So a white person might pay $1 while a latino and black might pay like 75 and 50 cents. Seems sort of an okay protest, right? It's not hurting anyone and getting across its point at the same time, right?

No. Imagine being an incoming black student and walking into your school on the first day only to see someone protesting about your being there? The funny thing is, when it comes to affirmative action, people always assume that if colleges are letting in more minorities, they're choosing less qualified students...okayyyy. Do you think your school is so desperate for minorities that they're willing to risk their precious gpa rankings? Or maybe it's possible that the school is simply attracting more INTELLIGENT, MOTIVATED minorities? Just not, possible, huh?

Well, if we're going to do away with affirmative action based on race, let's do the same for region, gender, and relation to alumni. It is well known that colleges like to have a student body that comes from a variety of regions as well as they like to keep it in the family (or rather, they love for their alumni's children to go to their school too). Also, let's be honest...I don't feel like looking it up the evidence right now...but at many colleges, there are more qualified women who apply than men. And what fun is there to have a predominantly female school? Administrators like to balance it out. Also, what about majors...what if the department is aiming to expand one of their departments, is this wrong too?

So, what exactly are we suppose to choose students on the basis of? Just grades?

It ain't gonna happen. So get used to it...you can get rid of affirmative action for minorities, but some form of it will always exist for someone else :)
