There are a variety of cheap wireless phones available for the elderly or those looking for prepaid low cost cell phones. Inexpensive cell phones for seniors can be life savers in cases of emergency. If you end up stranded on the side of a road somewhere or suffer an unfortunate fall and cannot get up, carrying your fully charged mobile phone will allow you to easily call friends, family, or 911.

You should verify that the carrier you choose has coverage in your area; an easy task online. For those that want to avoid a contract, a family member could add you to their plan for a few extra bucks per month. If not, these prepaid low cost cell phones are a great option.

Five Most Affordable Cell Phones for Senior Citizens

TracFone LG410

This prepaid low cost flip style wireless phone cost around $15. The TracFone is hearing aid compatible (HAC). Some of the other features of this basic cell phone include a color screen, hands free speaker, and a flashlight. The keys are nicely spaced for easier dialing.

Kyocera Jax

The Jax is an affordable simple cell phone for senior citizens. Available in pinkish-purple and black for around $10, it is not a flip phone. Features include TTY/TDD, HAC, a color screen, voice dialing and speakerphone. The keys are raised but slightly smaller than the TracFone.

Virgin Flare

The Flare is a flip phone that is compatible with hands-free headsets (Bluetooth). It comes with a power adapter and costs around $15. Features of this cheap prepaid mobile phones for seniors include TTY/TDD, HAC, voice activated dialing and speakerphone. Perhaps the best feature of the Flare is that you can adjust the font size. The keys are raised and not too small for easy dialing.

Kyocera TNT!

These simple and inexpensive prepaid cell flip phones are available for between $10 and $20. Features include a two-way speakerphone, TTY/TDD, HAC. You will need to purchase a charger separately. The Kyocera TNT is a great basic mobile phone but I do not recommend it for texting or for those that value great graphics.

Samsung U350 Glint

This prepaid wireless flip phone costs around $30. Call your friends and family with voice activated dialing. Other features include speaker phone, headset capability, camera, and advanced speech recognition. The screen size is nice but the key pad may be difficult for men with large fingers.

Wireless Airtime Minutes

In my opinion, Virgin Mobile and TracFone offer the most reasonable pay as you go cellular phones for senior citizens. Virgin Mobile charges $20 for 200 minutes, $30 for 400 minutes, or $50 for 1000 minutes. You can also choose a $.20/minute basic plan. TracFone airtime minutes cost $20 for 60 minutes. My first wireless phone was an inexpensive Kyocera cell phone from Virgin Mobile. I was very pleased with Virgin's customer service.

So far, the cell phone for seniors that offer the most practical service rates is Just5. My mom is using a phone from this provider and she really like the fact that she doesnt have to hurt her purse to keep in touch with us while securing her safety at the same time. She only spends $.10 for each minute with this provider and all the minutes in the offered minute plans expire in 90 days. The unlimited service only costs $40 for 30 days as well. Its really friendly to the seniors purse.

It's so cheap but so reliable. Gives me such a great peace of mind that I can now finally get in touch with my grandpa. He's quite a busy bod so we used to worry about him all the time as he never had a cell phone previously. Needless to say, we no longer have that problem. He attaches it to a chip that is like a necklace around his neck so it is always on him.

I love that the SVC from Tracfone has 911 emergency location assist as I used to worry terribly about Mom living alone and not being able to call for help! She loves the big, easy to push buttons and large text and that the screen lights up to help her see better, and she adores getting calls from me and texts from the kids.

There are so many services for elders now, which is great! However, the one I found worked best (and was the cheapest by far in terms of the montly service) were the SVC phones with Tracfone. They have undoubtedly the best plan for seniors. Im just glad my parents have something they can use if they need it. They dont talk on their phones all day, but if they are in trouble or hurt they can always call for some help and that really gives me some peace of mind. I'm glad overall that there's a push for these types of phones. I feel like their age group may need it the most, but with less frequency so it's perfect for them.

The SVC phone from TracFone is ideal for seniors. Large key pad and super simple to use, even my techno phobic uncle can use. The phone cost less than $10 a month and the phone itself is $15!!! What an incredible deal. Now all I need to do is convince grandpa to let me buy him one so we can reach him at all times!

Sorry..end of comment got chopped off-refer to previous comment; To end off, while the minutes are not the lowest rate you'll find, as infrequent users, they can keep the monthly cost really low.
As I said, don't just jump at price...do some research and find the service and phone that suits your individual needs best.

The thing is, price isn't everything. It's all good and well to have the cheapest option available, but it's not much use if it ends up being unreliable when you really need it.
My parents move around a lot between their children, so when I looked into prepaid plans, I had a number of criteria that needed to be met. The Samsung T155 in conjunction with Tracfone's SVC plan came out tops from an overall perspective. Most important was coverage and TF roams between networks at no extra charge. The phone has 911 location assist, large text, bright screen and external light up pictures to indicate messages and missed calls. The menu couldn't be easier to navigate with simple yes/no answers to move to where you want to be. All round, such a user friendly phone for anyone who is a bit nervous with technology.
They need never worry about having a bill forwarded to them and can top up easily wherever they go.
The bonus was that the phone was really cheap, and while the mi
