After 28 Years, Gene Simmons Pops the Question

How Should a Couple Live Together Before Getting Married?

Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed's Answer is 28 Years

Anyone who has watched "Gene Simmons: Family Jewels" knows this season has had a rough patch for the family. Shannon Tweed has wanted Gene to marry her for years and he couldn't quite make that commitment to her, but with help from therapy, he found a way to make Ms. Tweed happy in this area of their lives.

That's the short version of the story. After almost three decades, Simmons did pop the question on the season finale of the show.

Sure some would argue, and they have in the comments of Popeaters story of Simmons and Tweed, three decades is just way to long to be living together with two children in the house. Maybe it is and maybe it isn't.

After having lived with my husband for a decade before we were married, I can see both sides. There's the thought of is a marriage certificate really going to change how people feel about each other; especially after a decade or three. No, it won't, but the thought of making it legal and morally acceptable can play a hindrance in it as well. Not everyone lives their lives the same.

Gene and Shannon will find a way to make it through this rough patch. They will find a way to make their "legal" marriage work as they have done for 28 years. Fights happen. Insecurities happen. Love can trump all.

So how long should a couple live together before getting married? My husband and I say 10 years; Gene and Shannon say 28 years. There's no real answer to this question; not even in the Bible if you read it.

Before condemning a couple for living together, it is best to understand your own life before you try to understand theirs. Leaving their fame out of the equation, I am probably one of the few of their fans who understands enough of what they are going through to not judge them.
