After an Auto Accident: Keeping Your Cool and not Letting Your Emotions Take Over
High Emotions Can Keep You from Focusing on Important Details
First you want to make sure that no one is hurt. Check your passengers for injury quickly. If anyone seems to be in pain or obviously injured, be sure to call 911.
Pull over and make contact with anyone else involved in the accident. If it is a minor accident make sure to exchange information. It is always best to stay at the scene of the accident for at least a half hour. Even if you exchange information and agree to handle financial matters privately the other parties involved can call police and make a report that you might not know about. You could be facing charges for leaving the scene of an accident even if everything seems in order.
When you get into an auto accident it can be difficult to remember important details. Make a mental note or if you have a pen and paper handy make an account of what happened. How fast were you going? How fast do you think the other drivers were going? Where were all the cars located at the time of the accident? Where exactly did the impact occur? What time did this happen? Are there any witnesses? You will want to have this information on hand for the police report.
Most importantly, stay calm. Getting stressed out and anxious can make you become less receptive to the questions you will be answering for the police. You'll want to answer everything in a clear and concise manner. You may only spend less than an hour at the actual scene of the accident, but if further legal matters ensue everything you say can be brought up in court later. Keep answers as brief and to the point as possible.
Afterwards take visual inventory of the damage to your car as well as all other vehicles involved. If your cell phone has a built in camera it can't hurt to take a few photographs. Get contact information from any witnesses if possible.
When you get back home make sure and take it easy. Being in an automobile accident can be stressful and worrisome. Be alert for any late forming injuries such as whiplash. Be sure and visit your doctor if you have any concerns.
