After Five Years, Katie Couric is Likely Leaving CBS News

Three Favorite Katie Couric Moments

Katie Couric has all but confirmed she will be leaving CBS News when her contract is up in June. She is hinting at a possible syndicated talk show.

I must admit, I'm not a Katie Couric fan. I haven't seen many broadcasts, but there are a few that standout. These are my favorite moments from her tenure as the anchor of the "CBS Evening News."

Katie Couric interviews John McCain, gives him a mulligan

When interviewing Arizona Sen. John McCain during the presidential campaign, Couric asks him about the surge strategy in Iraq. When McCain gets it wrong, Couric and CBS air the segment, but with a different answer from McCain.

"Because of the surge we were able to go out and protect that sheik, and others. And it began the Anbar awakening. I mean, that's just a matter of history," McCain said. But of course, it's not. The Anbar awakening began before the surge started. Couric and CBS were nice enough to fix McCain's gaffe; see the video here.

Katie Couric angers conservatives by signing off in Chinese

When Couric ended her news broadcast Jan. 19, 2011, she signed off with a short Chinese phrase. The last segment of the broadcast had correspondent Terry McCarthy doing a piece about the importance of teaching more than one language in schools and how America lacks in that endeavor.

Many conservatives just went ballistic. This site has some tamer comments; others are downright vulgar.

Katie Couric and the interviews of Sarah Palin

I don't know if a face can launch a thousand ships, but the interview of Sarah Palin launched the career of one comedy star into the stratosphere. We will be showing clips of Tina Fey as Sarah Palin to our grandchildren.

The sad part is, Palin as herself is just as laughable. Here is a video link to the segments on CBS, just in case you don't remember. Palin reads all the newspapers, can't recall a Supreme Court case other than Roe v. Wade, and can't string two coherent sentences together.

Couric's Palin interview is widely seen as what kept other Tea Party favorites away from the press in 2010. Still, Sharron Angle in Nevada, Christine O'Donnell in Delaware, and Rand Paul in Kentucky were among the conservatives caught blundering in front of the press.

Katie Couric finally made the transition to a good anchor, but was a bit too stern looking in beginning... drastic change from perky morning look. Will be fun to see what her next gig is. And she made history and her astonishing salary sets the bar high for the young girls/ careers
