After the Geminids Meteor Shower Comes a Pre Christmas Rare Total Lunar Eclipse on December 21, 2010

December 21 is the First Day of Winter, the Winter Solstice, Night of a Full Moon and a Rare Total Lunar Eclipse

Rue Cooper
The last lunar eclipse of 2010 will be on December 21 and just after the Geminids Meteor Shower. The total event will be visible through North and South America, and unlike the Geminids all-night meteor shower, the lunar eclipse will be complete in a little over an hour.

A show for midnight sky-gazing

The partial eclipse will begin just after midnight at 1:33 am (Eastern Standard Time). Total eclipse begins at 2:41 am and ends at 3:53 am with the partial eclipse ending at 5:01 am.

Second lunar eclipse in 2010

This is the second of two lunar eclipses in 2010 with the first one in June being a partial eclipse. The previous total lunar eclipse was almost three years ago on February 21, 2008. The next two moon eclipses will be on June and December 2011 and will be almost total.

Just keep the comfortable lawn chairs and blankets handy after the Geminids meteor shower and bring the whole family out again to enjoy this brief and rare sky-show.
