After Neil Diamond, Will Brooke White Make it Another Night?

Sher E Hart
Brooke White has a large fan base to keep her in the top each week. She seems to eek by even though her performances haven't been knocking our socks off lately. Tonight was another so-so performance as she appeared completely self conscience and lacking confidence singing Neil Diamonds' song "I'm a Believer". The image of the donkey from Shrek kept dancing through my head as she sang. Not one of her stronger performances.

The guitar even seemed a bit out of place for her tonight too. One thing she has going for her is she has the look of a "mellow" singer, especially when behind the comfort of the piano. It was extremely obvious in the transition from her first Neil Diamond song "I'm a Believer" to her last Neil Diamond song "I Am I Said" that she could relax a bit when shielded by the ebonies and ivories. She is noticeably more comfortable behind the piano than behind the guitar, however, the litmus test is when you close your eyes and listen to her performance without looking at her. She seems to struggle to stay on the notes and in tune sounding like she is singing while slipping on mud.

She has a reputation of talking back to the judges and besides being glaringly inappropriate it sheds light on the fact that she isn't really listening, she is automatically thinking about what she is going to say in response to their critique. She even somewhat admits this openly. Fortunately for her she is easy on the eyes.

She started out pretty strong in the beginning of the season with her unique raspy type voice but these last several weeks she has progressively gone down hill. Does she have what it takes? It doesn't sound like it.

Does she have contenders? Yes and no. Yes because most everyone left has the ability to stay in the top and no because she, in our opinion, is the weakest link. It doesn't look like Brooke White will remain in the top for another week, but each elimination in the last several weeks has been somewhat of a shock. No offense Brooke, after all, you are in the top 5 and that is not so "forgettable" as Simon says. It has been said before that this could end up being a popularity competition instead of a singing competition and if it boils down to that it could just be one of the two Davids who walks away as the next American Idol.
