"Again" by Flyleaf - A Review of the Music Video
A Closer Look at the Song and Fiery Video for "Again" by Flyleaf
For viewers who are not already acquainted with the song "Again" from Flyleaf, the actual visual dynamics of the video can overwhelm the lyrics on the first viewing and even the second. The third watch is spent thinking "What does this video have to do with the song?" Finally, on the fourth or fifth view, a slow realization of the coupling of fire destroying and creating can begin to tie into the lyrics of the song.
The lyrics "I love you please see and believe again" are demonstrated through the band performing in the fiery furnace, which the viewer later sees depicted as a stage or movie screen with a crank projector casting the images of the dancers and swirling woodcuts onto the screen as Lacey Mosley operates the crank. For the brief moment that Mosley appears in the video as the projectionist, she looks lovely and appropriately distant -- engrossed in the motion she is releasing to the world.
As she actually performs the lyrics to "Again," the lead singer of Flyleaf appears a little less stately in what could best be described as a broken-down prom look complete with tousled hair and hot pink lipstick. Lacey Mosley is still beautiful in the destroyed look, and she belts "Again" with the forcefulness and style her ensemble lacks. The understated outfit ends up working when coupled with the visual effects - anything more would have been lost in the fire soup.
Flyleaf guitarist Sameer Bhattacharya offered commentary to MTV news relative to the meaning of the fire and the overall video theme when he stated, "The whole theme is that everything comes to an end ... but there's always hope and a bigger picture too. There are these images that start out as light and energy, and they slowly turn into these woodcuts - something real." 1
Devout Flyleaf fans may have picked up on the connection faster than casual listeners, but even without the inside track on Flyleaf, the "Again" video is interesting to watch. The actual song is definitely worth a second look and listen as Lacey Mosley manages to sing her heart out and win the listener's heart in tandem, no fire necessary.
