Aging Baby Boomers: What Happened to Being Natural?

Denise Nuttall
The baby boomer generation had such a big impact in the sixties as far as going natural in our appearance. No longer was the big bouffant and heavy makeup in fashion. The big emphasis was on aging naturally and being what you wanted to be. What happened?

Now that the baby boomers are hitting retirement age, it seems all that naturalness has gone out the window.

People want to look there best at any age, but can't baby boomers still look their best naturally?

Take a look around and notice how many baby boomers are cosmetically enhanced. The number of boomer women who do not color their hair is minimal. The marketplace is flooded with anti-aging this and anti-aging that. Like aging is unnatural. Movie stars and television personalities mostly all have there faces altered in some form. Botox, facelifts and facial reconditioning has become main stream.

Growing older now seems to be the plague for this generation that shouted from the roof tops of self acceptance. Baby boomers are supposed to be defining what aging is all about. They seem to have lost perspective that it is okay to be who they are at any age. They could be adding such great value to the society in whole. Redefining aging as a beautiful process instead of renouncing that it is still something to fear and be ashamed of. A generation that was looked up to as a group of people that made a difference now is definitely dropping the ball.

Baby boomers are still the largest group of people in our society and still have the power to define how they are looked upon by society as a whole. Looking older is not going to be okay until it is okay in the hearts of this generation. Even with all the enhancements, they still look older so why don't they stop?

Aging baby boomers could better spend their time embracing growing older naturally but healthy and still full of all the self confidence that drove them into the lime light of the decades of the sixties. There shouts were heard in the sixties and changes were made. Now they need to be shouting just as loud now not only for there generation but for the next generations as well. It will be interesting to see what happens to this generation when they go into there seventies and eighties. Will the baby boomers except aging as natural then?
