Well, normally two types of aging are there - intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic aging is a natural phenomenon and happens when we grow in years. Extrinsic aging is what is caused by external factors like sun, facial expression, smoking, sleeping position etc.
It is said that when we age, elastin and collagen, which are the most important components, start to break apart when we grow. This causes the skin to loosen its elasticity, which is a major factor in bringing wrinkles. Moreover, the cell production also slows down, which causes fat cells and oil glands to atrophy. This keeps away the moist from the skin, which makes it dry.
There are a lot of theories associated with ageing. Some are Hayflick Limit Theory Telomere Theory and Free Radical Theory.
Well, these are only some of the explanations as to why the skin ages. There can be many more reasons and theories that go with ageing.
