Aglaia, the Moirae, and Bones

Brendan W Vittum
Aglaia, The Moirae, and Bones

He has studied. He has studied
the psychology. He has studied
the patterns of the mind, the family -
individual, and the unit. He has studied
these things over twenty years - studied,
intellectualized and understands
them inside and out -
abstractly.

He is aware, very aware
of the behaviors, the thought processes
and their order as inevitable causalities -
of each individual action, one feeling
preceding another in a predetermined dance
he watches; a spectator somehow without
the power to alter.

He is aware, he sees these things
but he does not understand. He does not
understand why, knowing as he does
the psychology, the patterns, the behaviors,
he reaches for Aglaia. In knowing, in reaching
towards, tells Aglaia how in time fingers
of bone will move from stroking
her mind to crushing - will destroy Aglaia.

He does not understand why
he destroys Aglaia - but he does -
in the knowing, in the telling,
in the understanding, Bones ought
to be vigilant, to be as aware of the death
hiding in his touch as of their friend
the squirrel unseen in the ditch
from all eyes but his. He knows.

And if he does not bring harm
to the mirage dancing just past his grasp
as a progression of patterns? Driven
by compulsions until - process
begun again, recognized too late to halt
events, actions, thoughts hurtling downhill -
the causality makes the prophecy reality.

Leaving Bones cursing genetics, psychology,
The Moirae and The Erinyes, swearing to never
care, to never reach again for what is not for
him touch - hoping Aglaia fluoresces
in his absence.
