Sometimes panic attacks happen more in a specific situation, so we avoid it. The list of places grows. The fearful thoughts and physical sensations felt are very real.
Being in control is a huge issue. The fact that many don't feel in control of their thoughts and feelings is a major part of having agoraphobia.
It can be debilitating. In extreme cases, a sufferer may be confined to just a room. Generally, sufferers of agoraphobia tend to develop a 'safe zone'. Once beyond this zone, thoughts of terror can start to creep in. Physical sensations may or may not be present, but fear is. Trusted companions are very often needed for outings past safe zones (which is generally a part of the neighborhood).
Escape
Agoraphobics are always looking for ways of escape. Sitting near exits offers a quick chance for escape. This way, in case they encounter a problem, there's less of a chance of being seen. An agoraphobic does not want to be seen having an attack and losing control.
Having agoraphobia can be equated to 'having one's mind being raped'. Something has been forced upon them which they did not want and they are left feeling traumatized.
When trying to do their therapy, they may end up 'chickening out'. For example, if they decided to go from Point A to Point B as part of their therapy, although they may be close to reaching Point B, they start feeling so overwhelmed that they decide to run back home, which is Point A. Although Point B would have been closer, the fear consumes them and they seek refuge by going home.
This is a huge mistake (although understandable). One needs to stay with what they are feeling. This is easier said than done, as facing the fear is the hardest thing to do. But if they can face the fear, the agoraphobia and all its associated fears and sensations will slowly start to fizzle out.
Change your thoughts
Agoraphobia has a sneaky way of creeping into your life. Get help quickly. It gets worse with time. Therapy will require facing your fears knowingly. How many people like to feel terror? Yet, to get well, you need to do it.
Agoraphobia changes your thinking. You must try to change it back. You will have a lot of "what if" thoughts. This has to stop. You can change thinking patterns with practice.
Most doctors are not trained to deal with mental issues. This is why many suffer for years, going from doctor to doctor, before getting help. Mental problems aren't viewed with the same 'sympathy' as physical handicaps.
Panic and agoraphobia can ruin or strain relationships. It's very hard for anyone to understand. It is viewed as 'our fault'. We sufferers are supposed to 'snap out of it'.
Don't use alcohol
Never use alcohol as part of your therapy. Although it does work by giving you courage, it's the wrong way to do it. You depend on it. You could end up an alcoholic. You now have a new problem.
Many fall into the 'alcohol' trap. There are other alternatives that are just as effective which you can use.
Agoraphobia is treatable. You can and will get better. It takes time, effort and practice, but it can be done. Stay positive and concentrate on your goals. Keep a
journal and record your therapy sessions. You may have to implement several changes, such as changing thoughts, therapy and medication. Together, these changes will slowly start taking effect as you start feeling better and more confident.
