Agritourism in the Catskills Region of New York

Known for films like Tootsie and A Walk on the Moon, the Catskills region of New York is also a prime destination for agritourism. If you love the idea of communing with nature and getting great deals on home-grown produce, there are plenty of options for you to consider in this area of the country. From fresh vegetables to exotic animals, to nurseries full of interesting plants and flowers, agritourism flourishes in the diverse climate of the Catskills.

In fact, the Hurds Family Farm was chosen as winner of the New York State Agritourism Award in 2003. Located in Clintondale, New York, this private facility is open to the public for educational purposes, as well as to purchase various fruits, vegetables and plants that are grown on its 75 acres. They sell Christmas trees every December, pumpkins during October and November, and they have a Corn Maze challenge every fall.

You might also find the Catskill Native Nursery to be a prime agritourism destination. This farm is located in Kerhonkson, New York, right at the southern edge of the Catskills. Every May, they hold a Wildflower Festival where guests can bring their own precious blooms, or spend time browsing the ones grown on the property. They also sell botanical prints, as well as every type of plant you can imagine: ferns, fruits, vines, trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses, and even wetland plants.

And finally, if you have a taste for fruit, don't forget to stop by the Kelder Farm & U-Pick, which is a unique agritourism destination in that everyone picks their own fruits and vegetables. From raspberries to blueberries; apples to oranges; peaches to plums - the Kelder Farm has everything. They sell indoor and outdoor plants from their greenhouse, which carries a seasonal selection of various flowers, and guests can spend an educational day on the farm, learning about the inner workings of the rural lifestyle.
