Agritourism in the Finger Lakes Area of New York

The Finger Lakes region of New York is home to one of the most bountiful selections of agritourism destinations. From U-Pick farms with plenty of fresh produce to roadside fruit stands and country markets, you'll never want for fresh fruits and vegetables or contact with nature.

Starting in the spring, you might want to visit the Vinewood Acres Sugar Shack, which is the place to go in the Finger Lakes region for fresh maple syrup. Known by agritourism enthusiasts worldwide, the Sugar Shack is open to anyone who wants to buy large quantities of syrup to enjoy a breakfast on location with a wide selection to try. Expect to spend between $6 and $10 per bottle on blueberry, blackberry and currant flavors, as well as fruit butters and unique sauces.

And in June, you should drop by Jerome's You Pick 'Em for fresh strawberries and raspberries, as well as short classes on how to make homemade jams. Prices start at $5 per bottle of jam, and classes are free during the weekdays. You can also tour the farm and learn how fruits are grown and harvested, which is an excellent educational opportunity if you plan to grow your own.

September in the Finger Lakes region means the Grape Harvest Festival, which is hosted in Naples, New York. A Farm Market exposes guests to the best in local fruits, vegetables and baked goods, and a Grape Pie Contest judges pies from all over the Finger Lakes. The wine tasting itself requires a $2 donation for every adult who attends to try 12 different samples.

Orchards such as Red Jacket have great deals on fresh produce, such as the Red Jacket 12-pack of apples for 27.95, and the 3-quarts juice packs for $22.95. The Long Acre Farms in Macedon, New York, are also popular, with plenty of homemade ice cream and opportunities to feed and pet the animals. Long Acre focuses on healthy lifestyle choices, and offers free admission for most events.
