AGT 2010: Jackie Evancho, Dan Sperry & Maestro Alexander Bui Advance

YouTube Elimination Night

After reading many of the reviews of last night's America's Got Talent YouTube contestants, I think we may have been a little harsh. Myself included. I forgot these people have never been in front of a major audience, let alone on live TV with judges. That being said, the rules are what they are and they play no favorites. So four more acts were advanced to the 2010 AGT semifinal rounds.

Nick Cannon called out the first group of YouTube contestants: Pup, Pizza Patt, Maestro Alexander Bui and Austin Anderson. Cannon asked Sharon Osbourne who she thought America voted for. "Oh, I just don't know!" said Osbourne. Seriously? How stupid does Sharon Osbourne think the American public, even those that watch and vote on talent shows, really is?

After Maestro Alexander Bui was told he was safe, Piers Morgan laid into Sharon (rightfully so). "You've got a dog that didn't do anything, the worst comedian in the world, a guy that throws pizza dough and a world class pianist...and you don't know who America voted through?" Thank you Piers.

The second group of hopefuls included: Dylan Plummer, Dan Sperry and Booker Forte. I liked this line up since it was a pretty clear lean toward Dan Sperry. Sure enough, Sperry got voted into the AGT semifinals. He said he has something interesting planned for the other two judges. Sperry completely freaked out Howie Mandel last night by throwing his neck floss on him. Mandel ran for the hills upon hearing the announcement tonight.

In an odd change up, Nick Cannon only called two names for the next group: Ryan Rodriguez and Jackie Evancho. The look on Rodriguez's face said it all. Quick like a band-aid, Nick Cannon put him out of his misery. Jackie Evancho was the only real sure thing about last night's live performances. Howie Mandel asked Evancho to sing a few notes to prove that voice was really hers and she gladly obliged.

Quick Change made their return to the AGT stage tonight with a fun performance. This time it got started a little slow, but the finish is always worth it. I have no idea how that final change is done. Watch the full version here.

Next came a performance from YouTube sensation Judson Laippley and his "Evolution of Dance". It was a shortened version, but just as great as ever. You can see the full version here.

The final live act of the night was Lin "Jimmy" Yu Chun singing his YouTube hit cover of Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You". Spot on perfect. Such a joy to listen to, he sounded even better tonight if that's possible. His YouTube video can be seen here.

The judges' pick came down to singers. The talent show really doesn't need more singers in the semifinals and I don't think either Kristina Young or Cam Hodges can compete with those already advancing. I really thought Plutonic could pull off the win. It was not to be, Plutonic was eliminated before the judges got a chance. The judges made the right choice in Kristina Young. I think Alice Tan Ridley has that category well in hand though.

Next week will be the last of the quarterfinal rounds of AGT 2010. The season's favorite contestants will get another chance and the last four acts will make up the 24 semifinalists.
