Ah, the Benefits of Temping

If you are in between jobs or are off from school for the summer, a great way to get build years of work experience into just weeks is to sign on at your local temp agency.

Carpe Diem

For one thing, temping can be exciting work if you choose to see it as such. On most occasions, you get called early in the morning for your assignment. So you will usually know by 9:30 whether you have an assignment or not. Waking up in the morning not knowing if you're going in to work or jogging at the beach is easier to enjoy if you're not strapped for cash. But, even if you are, it always helps to have a back up. In the spirit of carpe diem, it's best to decide ahead of time what you want to do with your day in case you don't get called in. For most of us, the reason we sign up with a temp agency in the first place is that we're between jobs or on break from college. The point is, to use this new time-off wisely, you never know how long your next assignment will last. Seize this time to get back in shape, do what you've been putting off, spring-clean your house, job hunt, run errands, or write some articles for Associated Content. Adding structure to your day is a way to guarantee you'll end up building something in the months off.

Stepping Into the Unknown

On days when you do get called in on assignment, it's a completely new experience. Temp agencies are used by a variety of industries such as loan processing centers, law offices, and non-profit agencies. It's a great way to get familiar with a number of different industries that you could have otherwise gone through your whole career experiencing just a few. Your assignments can be as varied or as specialized, as you are flexible and skilled. Every workplace you walk into has its own personality. Some places are bit laid back and some are ultra-conservative. Some businesses operate like family and others you can pick up on the workplace tensions right away. One of the great things about temping is that you're usually not there long enough to have to deal with any of the office politics. As an outsider you walk-in with a fresh perspective and so you can also learn about human sociology as you experience the contrasting work environments. If you open yourself up to the experience it can be very enriching..

The Dating Scene

Unlike a permanent position where taboos of office dating apply, when you are temping assignments may last for just a day or week. If you happen to find an employee attractive your free to date without the taboos once your assignment is over.

Finding Your Potential Future Employer

If you don't land the perfect date at your next temp job, you might find the next perfect employer. Companies often recruit temp agencies for possible new hires. It's a way for them to try out an employee before actually hiring them. That works out brilliantly because it gives you the opportunity to get to know the workplace dynamics and personalities before you decide to work with them. It's the workplace equivalent of living together before getting married.

Breakout of Your Shyness, Bust out of Your Routine

If you have been laid off after having worked years with the same company or if you struggle during interviews, temping is a great way to increase your confidence and people skills. Temping can be much like speed dating for the newly single. It's something worth trying just for the heck of it. You never know where it might lead.
