Ah Sa Wan Restaurant: Cheap Chinese Food Done Right in Minneapolis

Contrary to popular belief, Ah San Wan is a Chinese food establishment. It would also be considered a fast food eatery, because the service is extremely quick. The restaurant has been providing the downtown Minneapolis area with Chinese food for close to 20 years.

This restaurant serves traditional Chinese food. However, there are a couple of items that should be spotlighted. The eggrolls at this restaurant are better than those of most Chinese restaurants are. They are stuffed with chicken, cabbage, and carrots, but have more chicken than I have seen in many comparable businesses. Another item that sticks out on the appetizer menu is the vegetable curry puffs. These are crispy wonton wrapped chop vegetables with curry seasoning. This is great for both the meat eater as well as the vegan. The soups available are the standard hot & sour, wonton, and egg drop. The hot & sour soup has a great mix of the right amount of spice and tartness. They seem to be consistent with their recipe, unlike many other Chinese restaurants, for which on some days it is sour and on other days is watered down and tasteless.

The menu also includes chicken fried rice, and vegetable fried rice. The only downside to the restaurant is that there are not many seafood items on the menu, with the exception of sweet & sour shrimp. You can get chicken in many different ways such as sweet & sour, lemon, sesame, honey glazed, and broccoli. There are quite a few beef options as well, including Szechwan, Mandarin, and cashew, for starters.

For vegetarians the options are vast. There is the vegetable fried rice, steamed rice, vegetables in Szechwan sauce, broccoli tofu, and Imperial tofu. However, be aware that some of these items are only offered on certain days of the week.

No specialty drinks are available at this restaurant.

Prices range from a $1.20 for the half order of appetizers, which are sold with an entrée only, to the sweet and sour shrimp, which is $5.75.

All food on the menu is available for checkout and the dress code is casual. During peak times, which are lunchtime Monday through Friday, a party of four can expect to wait approximately 20 minutes for a table. This restaurant does not take reservations. You can also consider this restaurant to be kid friendly, though most of the restaurant patrons are business people.

The restaurant has two locations in the downtown Minneapolis area. The first location is at TFC Tower Skyway, at 121 S. 8th St., Minneapolis, Minnesota 55402. Their phone number is 612.332.9190. The other location is at US Bancorp Skyway, at 800 Nicollet mall, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55402. Their phone number is 612.436.0880. Both locations are open Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
