Any defect or malfunction of pitot tube could cause the airspeed sensors to work in an improper manner and the computer controlling the plane to accelerate or decelerate in a potentially dangerous manner.

The air safety experts described that if pilots on the Rio de Janeiro-Paris flight could not ascertain the speed required to fly through rough weather conditions, or flew at an incorrect speed, a crash might have resulted.

Still the theory of air France conspiracy has not been fully turned down by the BEA officials. They are putting all their efforts on the 24 malfunction messages that were automatically sent in the final minutes of the flight.
