Airborne was "invented" by Victoria Knight-McDowell, a school teacher who was tired of getting sick all the time. She worked to formulate a drug-free formula of herbs and vitamins that would strengthen one's immune system-particularly someone who felt as if he or she were coming down with a cold or virus. The name "airborne" was appropriately chosen because these viruses are transmitted through the air. Apparently, even Ms. Knight-McDowell was shocked at the success of her product.
There are several Airborne Health products now on the market. The original Airborne Effervescent tablets (in flavors orange, lemon-lime, and grapefruit) are sold in tubes of 10 tablets and dissolve in water. Airborne night-time is an apple cider hot drink flavor that has added ingredients to help you sleep better. Airborne On-the-Go is lemon-lime flavored powder that comes in convenient packets that you can easily add to a beverage or bottled water. Airborne Power Pixies are for children and are like mini Airborne sugar straws that children will have fun eating. For children, there are also Airborne dissolvable tablets that are grape flavored.
The ingredients in Airborne include: Vitamins A, C, & E, Magnesium, Zinc, Selenium, Sodium, Potassium, and an herbal blend with Echinacea and a variety of other herbs. Airborne contains a small amount of Sucralose and Sorbitol, which is my one complaint with Airborne. Because I am extremely sensitive to these artificial sweeteners, I am personally unable to use Airborne. I have written the company and asked them to make one form of Airborne with plain old sugar, but this has not happened yet.
My family has used Airborne frequently, and everyone I know who has tried it says that it does really work to shorten or prevent a cold. They say that the flavors are not the greatest-tasting, but you only need a little bit of water to dissolve the pill, so it's not too horrible to swallow.
Airborne Health Formula can be found at nearly all major drug and department stores. It will cost anywhere from $6.99 (the more expensive stores) to $4.99 (at Wal-Mart or Wegman's). It is definitely worth a try the next time you feel a cold coming on.
