Aircar: A Possible Revolution for the Auto and Energy Industries

Timmy Scott
Two weeks ago on Paul Harvey's radio show, I first heard the announcement of the Aircar. They joked about it only going 126 miles on a tank of air. They also joked about it struggling to go up a hill.

After the news cast, I decided to try and hunt down more information on this new means of transportation. I found information from two separate companies. One was MDI (Moteur Development International) and Air Car Factories, S.A. (South Africa). The philosophy behind the Aircar is just that. It runs on compressed air. Compressed air can be used as an energy source for transportation much like gasoline in a combustible engine.

The idea of using compressed air for fuel was first exploited as early as 1687 in London by Dennis Papin. In 1872 the first air engine was used for street transportation. The engine was called the Mekarski air engine.

In 1898 a two stage engine was introduced with the idea of keeping the compressed air longer in the engine. This engine was used in a transport locomotive invented by Hoadly and Knight.

1979 saw Terry Miller develop the Aircar one. He built it for $1,500. Miller's engine proved that a compressed air engine could be used for transportation. He had the engine patented in 1983.

The Aircar would be a ecological vehicle as well as an economic type of vehicle. There are other advantages as well. The cost would be small because it is inferior to costs compared to the combustible engine. Air is abundant and can be manufactured very easily. Air is not flammable. The tanks used in storing the compressed air can be recycled or discarded. Pollution would be reduced.

Another main purpose behind the Aircar is that of keeping the environment clean. The Aircar is presently undergoing new engine designs at major universities in the USA and Europe. Aircar factories hope to have vehicles for transportation on the open market in the next 12 months.

My own guess would be that an Aircar would be a smaller type vehicle, possibly a two person vehicle. They are also looking for investors into their new car. You can even get on a waiting list and they will let you know when the first vehicles are available for transportation.

The Aircar would work similar to the same way a combustible engine works. A strong jet of air would be forced into the cylinder of a car to move the pistons. Batteries would be used to generate energy to keep the air flowing as well as for other purposes.

If the Aircar factory is successful, it could revolutionize the world. There would be more involvement in the production of this cars. This means more jobs. Less dependence on oil. That would mean a large drop in the need for gasoline. The air would be clean and greener. This would have a major effect on current pollution problems that we mow face. The use for that type of energy could be used elsewhere.

A new form of technology would be in use that might be used in other areas of production. Think about the effect it would have on governments especially in the hotbed of the Mideast.

The Aircar, just like the regular motor car, will have to go through years of technology and development to improve on it. However, that too would open many new jobs for individuals.

I am answering the guy who says it is all a bluff. In fact that guy probably has an interest in oil and for many years"Big oil" has worked hard to make sure that we all buy the stuff that is ruining the planet. As a child I loved the electric trams in my home city of Liverpool. I wondered why they all disappeared to be replaced by diesel buses. "Big oil" made it happen, somehow. People with shares in oil will not want to see it reduced and the Luddites of any society hate to see change for the better if they think they will make a financial loss. The USA will have a new president elected in November. Let us pray that "Big oil" will not be able to make him their puppet as they have done with others for many years.
