Airport Reviews: Charlotte Douglass International Airport (CLT) - Charlotte, North Carolina

Jamie L. Melton
When it comes to large airports, Charlotte Douglass International airport is one of the best around.

Charlotte Douglass is located 6 miles from the heart of downtown Charlotte, North Carolina, on the westside of town. It's just minutes away from major freeways, such as I-85 and I-485.

Considering that I've only been to the Charlotte Douglass airport only on a connection type basis, I can only comment on this airport from a limited basis of observation.

First, the rental facilities are located in the terminal. So, you don't have to worry about going to an off-site location to get a rental car or SUV.

The one thing I notice about this airport is that it is clean. You can tell that this is an aspect that is truly important to them when you have attendants in the restrooms that are constantly cleaning; providing peppermints and mouthwash as you enter and exit the restrooms.

Since this is a large airport, they have made it fairly smooth to move from concourse to concourse. There are moving walkways lining the concourses to help you move around fairly quickly. Just recently, I was running behind trying to make a flight, and without the various moving walkways, I would have missed my flight.

Now, if you're hungry, you could not be in a better airport. There are restaurants pretty much everywhere. If you are looking for a place to get a quick bite to eat; they have it. If you've looking for semi-fine dining (as much fine dining you can get at an airport); they have that for you as well.

The novelty shops are nice and provide good souvenirs for tourists.

There is free Internet at Charlotte Douglass, but they have a limited number of AC outlets available for your laptop or cell phone.

Lastly, as you walk through parts of Charlotte Douglass airport you do feel like you're in a museum. You see these small exhibits of what the state of North Carolina has contributed to the United States and to the World. I think it's a nice touch, when airports do this.

There are things that could be better at this airport, as is in any airport you would visit, but all things being considered, this really is a nice 'large' airport.

For me, I give Charlotte Douglass International airport a solid B+.
