Airport Security Tips for the Smart Traveler: Rules and Regulations

Nanette Haz
Has it been a while since you have traveled last? Are you truly aware of the new security changes at the airport? Have you thoroughly planned your travel times and packed your luggage correctly? Here are four things you must know before going to the airport.

Health and Beauty products.

Before you pack your favorite health and beauty products you must be aware of the rules. Nothing liquid or a gel type consistency can go on the airplane with you in a full size bottle. All hand lotions, gels, hair products, tooth paste, etc, must be in a container that is three ounces or less. Place all of your health and beauty products over three ounces into your check on luggage. When you arrive at the security desk you will be asked to place the items that are 3 ounces or less into a small plastic Ziploc bag.

If for any reason you need these items with you and they are over the allowable size limit. You will have to go all the way back to the main check in counter to check these items in. If it is too late, and you do not want to miss your flight you will have to leave the items with security and they will be thrown away. No matter how expensive the product or item is, it will go into their trash can. Be sure to check your purse or carry on bag for expensive hand lotions, moisturizers, contact solution, and any other product over 3 ounces that may be in your purse or carry on bag.

Drinks and Snacks

Do not bring drinks, such as bottled water, canned sodas, or liquid nutrition supplements. These items are considered a liquid and will not be allowed to pass security. Even if you purchase these items from a shop inside of the airport before you pass through security. If you want to bring a drink with you onto the plane, you can purchase it from the shops that are located after the security checkpoint. These drinks are expensive. Plan on paying three to five dollars for each bottled or fountain drink.

Shoes and Accessories.

In the security line you will be asked to take off your belt, shoes, and possibly excessive jewelry. Your jewelry may have to be taken off and passed through the scanner machine if it sets off the alarm. Consider not wearing high heels with multiple buckles or straps. If you are wearing ballet flats or sandals you will be walking on the floor. Bringing along a pair of socks can keep your feet off of the floor and cozy during your flight.

Flight Arrival Time.

Arriving an hour before your flight is scheduled to leave is not enough time to get through the airport. To avoid long security lines, and prevent being worried about missing your flight, arrive very early. If you live in a major city be sure to show up and check in two and a half to three hours before your flights scheduled take off time. This will give you plenty of time to check in your luggage, wait in the long security lines, locate the correct departure gate, and grab a bite to eat.

Failing to plan your trip to the airport can cost you time and money. Use these tips when planning you next trip. Be on top of things; take action on these tips so that you will not be without your favorite beauty or personal hygiene products during your vacation.
