Airsoft Repair: Fixing Broken Airsoft Guns

Matthew Ewalt
For the beginner, airsoft repair can seem like a daunting task. Even trying to find the problem can be very difficult for some, and the entire process may seem impossible. Broken airsoft rifles leave you with a very expensive paperweight, which would cost a lot to be sent to a professional airsoft repair service. This airsoft repair guide will help you to find the problem, and give possible solutions to fixing your broken airsoft rifle.

1) No sound is made when the trigger is pulled.

First, be sure your battery is fully charged and connected properly to the rifle. Test it with a multimeter to be sure it is at full voltage.

Check if the fuse is still intact. This is a common problem of airsoft guns, and should be the first place you check when beginning airsoft repair. Find the fuse on the wire you connect the battery with. Open the fuse holder, and see if the thin piece of metal is broken. If it is, buy a new fuse with the same rating. Be careful however, as a broken fuse means there was a short in the circuit somewhere. If another fuse blows, check the wires of the airsoft gun and find the spot the wire is shorted out.

The final step of airsoft repair is to check all wires if there is still no sound made upon trigger pull. Somewhere in the circuit, a wire is not properly connected, and is breaking the circuit. Check the connectors for the battery, and the connection to the motor. Check the trigger contact inside the gearbox and make sure they are functioning correctly.

2) A whining noise is heard, but the gun does not fire.

Somehow, the gearbox is jammed. The first step of airsoft repair is to be sure there is not a BB jammed in the barrel. If a BB is lodged in the loading chamber, the nozzle can be jammed, which causes the gearbox to be unable to turn. Use a cleaning rod to shove down the barrel, and free any jammed BBs.

If your battery may have been low, the gearbox could have frozen while the piston was pulled all the way back. Try charging your battery up to see if it has enough power to repair the jam. If not, open the gun up until you have access to the gearbox. There will be a hole looking into the gearbox near the top. Use a metal object to help the motor push the piston back farther while pulling the trigger. Be careful, if you are successful, the piston will begin shooting forward very hard.

If the previous steps of airsoft repair did not fix the whining noise, you will have to open the gearbox. Use a guide to expose and open the gearbox. Somehow inside, the gears are jammed somehow. Be sure your gears are properly shimmed. Replace any defective parts.

3) The airsoft gun dry fires, double feeds, or jams BBs.

Begin airsoft repair by checking your magazines. Load them with BBs, and release them by pulling the tiny lever at the feeding end. If it does not properly feed, try adding silicon oil to the inside, or blowing the insides out with pressurized air. Some airsoft magazines can also be opened up to be cleaned and repaired.

Before continuing airsoft repair, make sure your hop-up is not turned up too much. If it is, loosen the hop-up so that the BB has room to get through into the barrel. Turn the hop-up off to make sure it is not the problem.

Be sure the BBs you are using are high quality. Airsoft repair is pointless if you are using cheap BBs. Do not use Walmart, CyberGun, or Crosman brand BBs. Only order high quality, polished BBs from reputable airsoft stores.

Continue airsoft repair by opening the gun up to the barrel and hop-up. Often times, feeding problems in airsoft guns can be fixed with replacing the hop-up. They can be found online for less than $10, and often times they will increase your accuracy much more over stock hop-up rubbers.

4) Semi auto/ full auto/ or safety is not working properly, or the gun shoots by itself.

Find the trigger circuitry, which is usually located inside the gearbox. Open it up, and study the way the fire selector works, and find where some metal is not making contact correctly. This airsoft repair often entails bending contact plates back into position, or replacing the trigger system.

5) BBs curve left/ right.

Open and expose the barrel and hop-up system. Take apart the hop-up system, and locate the hop up rubber which is fitted around the barrel.

Be sure the groove on the hop-up rubber is lined up properly with the groove on the barrel. The rubber needs to be lined up perfectly.

If the barrel was cleaned recently, silicon oil may be on the rubber. This will wear off eventually, and the airsoft gun will begin shooting correctly soon. Be sure to clean your airsoft rifle periodically for the best performance, using this guide.

The last step of airsoft repair would be to replace the hop-up rubber. As stated earlier, they can be found for less than $10, and often significantly improve accuracy.

- These are the main problems that beginners face with their airsoft guns. For other airsoft repairs, determine the problem, and find out the area the problem is being created. Open up the airsoft gun, and work to find the part that is not functioning correctly. Then, repair the part, or replace it.
