AKC Offers a Program for Mixed Breed Dogs

Mixed Breed Dogs Welcome at the American Kennel Club

Lynda Altman
The AKC, American Kennel Club, has a long history of catering to purebred dogs. Those who would like to enter their mixed breed animals in obedience and other events seemed to be discriminated against. As of October 1, 2009, that will all change.

Starting October 1, 2009 the AKC will allow owners of mixed breed dogs to list their dogs with the AKC. The fee is only $35.00 and the American Kennel Club will require all mixed breed dogs in this program to be spayed or neutered. The October 1 date is the first of three implementation phases.

During the first phase, mixed breed dogs registering for this program will be issued an ID number and card. The card allows the dog to participate in official AKC Mixed Breed designated competitions in Agility, Rally and Obedience.

Phase two is projected to start on July 1, 2010. Additional benefits to mixed breed owners will include AKC CAR lost and found service. This service includes a tag and 24/7 recovery help in case your dog is lost. An American Kennel Club Decal will be issued to the mixed breed dog owner. A free CGC (Canine Good Citizen) certificate will be issued to all AKC registered dogs that pass the test. Puppy owners will receive a copy of the Puppy Handbook. Adult dog owners will receive a copy of Dog Magazine. Additionally, registered AKC mixed breed dogs will be entitled to a free initial vet visit, online coupons and a trial offer to pet health insurance.

Phase three will give AKC registered owners of mixed breed dogs even more benefits. These have not yet been finalized. There is not set date for the implantation of phase three.

By offering owners of mixed breed dogs the AKC is expanding its membership base. It will allow the AKC to help promote dog related issues and provide more information to help all dog owners be responsible. By supporting the spay/neuter of mixed breeds the AKC is helping to control unwanted dogs. I volunteer at a no-kill shelter. We are always exceeding capacity as there are not enough homes for the 80+ dogs who reside there.

This is a good move by the American Kennel Club. It is about time that they realized the many talents of dogs with mixed pedigrees. Many of these dogs have amazing abilities in agility and obedience. Now they can compete and earn titles too.

That's excellent news! Some of the smartest dogs I've known are mixed breed dogs, so this will really step up the competition!
