Tara Dawn
If you are a film junkie, nerd, or lover in the Akron area, the coming of our city's 8th annual film festival will be a welcome announcement. Taking place at the Akron Art Museum, the festival will run from September 23-26th. The festival is hosted by Akron Film-a non-profit originated by Rob Lucas in association with the University of Akron newspaper, The Buchtelite.

The festival this year will include a mixture of local and international films. Akron filmmakers have the opportunity to showcase their work. Ohio films being featured include "The Real Bold Badmen," directed by Joe Siebert, "Sincerely, P.V. Reese," directed by Philip Swift, and "Rhythmic Uprising," directed by Ben Watkins. All local films will be followed by a filmmaker Q&A.

Along with these local films, other international films will be shown, many fresh from other film festivals. These include:

"New Low," directed by Adam Bowers and selected for the Sundance Film Festival
"Air Doll," directed by Hirokazu Koreeda and selected for the Cannes Film Festival
"Blondes in the Jungle," directed by Whitney Horn and Lev Kalman and selected for the 39th International Film Festival Rotterdam
"Obselidia," directed by Diane Bell and selected for the Sundance Film Festival
"Sons of Perdition," directed by Jennilyn Merten and Tyler Meason and selected for the Tribeca Film Festival.

In addition to feature-length films, a series of short films will also be shown on Saturday, including many from local Akron filmmakers.

Along with film showings, there will be a variety of activities that are available to the public. All are free of charge, however require registration at AkronFilm.com. These activities are set up like lectures or classes, and include:

Intro to Motion Design with Steve Felix of Akron Film

Title Animation with Cory Sheldon of Akron Film

Deconstructing Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho with Joanna Wilson-pop culture writer and author of 'Tis the Season TV

Cinematography with John Pope-Director of Photography for StoneKap Productions

Social Photography with Kyle Kutuchief, Greg Milo, and Brian Babb-authors of the photography blog The Chief Source
Acting for the Camera with Jimmie Woody-professional actor and drama instructor.

Pricing for the event varies-a single show runs at $7 per person, however a full festival pass can be bought for $24. As mentioned, activities are all free but require registration. All films will be shown at the Akron Art Museum, and activities will take place at both the Akron Art Museum as well as the Akron Digital Media Center. More information can be found on the festival at AkronFilm.com.
