If the winning candidate only achieves 50 percent of the votes cast they Democracy for America will send out a recruitment email for the candidate, but not officially endorse him or her. If none of the candidates break the fifty percent vote Democracy for America will award announcement emails to the winning candidates on a state by state basis. Right now Al Gore is leading the poll as a write in candidate.
So far more than 82,000 voters have participated in the poll. Participants do not need to be members of Democracy for America, but must supply an email address to vote in the poll. Al Gore has received close to 30 percent of the votes cast. In second place is Barrack Obama with 20.85 percent of the votes cast.
In close third is Dennis Kucinich, who has received 20.39 percent of the votes. John Edwards has received 16 percent of the votes cast thus far, and the remaining candidates have each received less than five percent of the votes. The poll will end on November 5, 2007 - one year before the real election.
Voters who participate are asked to choose and rank three of the candidates as their favorites. The web site also offers participants the opportunity to view videos made by the candidates for Democracy for America members. The videos describe the candidate's positions on global warming and climate change. Available are videos by Barack Obama, Dennis Kucinich, John Edwards, Bill Richardson, and Mike Gravel.

Democracy for America describes itself on its website as a political action committee dedicated to supporting fiscally responsible, socially progressive candidates at all levels of government. The group was founded by Howard Dean and supporters of his unsuccessful bid for presidency back in 2004. At the time Dean promised that the organization would continue to fight for the same progressive values embodied by his campaign for president. Voters can get involved in the group by joining the group's local chapters found in most states.
