Al Gore and Tipper to Separate; Was the Writing on the Wall?

They "Grew Apart"

Tina Molly Lang
Al Gore and his wife, Tipper, have called it quits on their 40-year marriage. According to AP/Yahoo News, the Gores reported that "a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration."

Unlike other dysfunctional couples such as the Clintons, there were no allegations of infidelity. They had simply grown apart.

Before 2000, Al and Tipper Gore had seemed like such a happy all-American couple with their wholesome looks and attractive children. And as an in-your-face to critics of Lewinsky-gate, Al Gore showed all of America that he was a happily married man, as seen in his heartfelt kiss at the 2000 Democratic National Convention.

Al Gore and Tipper to Separate: Al's Downward Spiral Post-2000

After losing the 2000 election by the narrowest of margins, Al Gore was a lost soul who eventually became a caricature of his former self. In the 1990s, Al Gore and Tipper Gore, married 40 years, to separate, AP/Yahoo News was a relatively pragmatic moderate politician who ran as a Third Way centrist Democrat in the style of Bill Clinton and Tony Blair. He was also a happily married family man.

Yet after the cruel twist of fate (and a Supreme Court ruling), Al Gore seemed to struggle to find himself again. He redirected his political ambitions first to teaching, then to his increasingly fanatical obsession with "global warming." And his downward spiral was mirrored in his changed physical appearance with his new beard and dramatic weight gain.

Living with a politician automatically comes with its set of challenges. And who knows how much more difficult it was to live with someone who was experiencing such a downward spiral? In a way, Al Gore's behavior is understandable--to work your whole life for an elusive goal only to fall short by a razor thin margin (as sitting VP and winner of the popular vote), one can't be too surprised that he went bonkers.

As one particularly sardonic Yahoo blogger wrote, "'Tipper Gore is known for her advocacy on mental health issues.' Apparently she has decided to give up and move on to another patient.'"

Still, one can't help feeling a bit disappointed to hear of Al and Tipper Gore's potential divorce. If a seemingly happy couple like Al and Tipper can't make it, what hope is there for the rest of us?

In other words, Gore's downward spiral is all George Bush's fault? Gads!! Tell him to put on his big-boy pants and move on. He has more advantages than many people out there, especially with so many losing jobs. Forgive me if I don't shed any tears over this "news flash."

Al Gore is a totally changed man..In 2000, I voted and supported him, but the way he is now, I will never vote for him or even see his speech..he has become a radical nutcase, from a moderate Clinton Dem...I totally agree that "Al Gore seemed to struggle to find himself again."

I 100000% agree with your words that say "He redirected his political ambitions first to teaching, then to his increasingly fanatical obsession with "global warming." And his downward spiral was mirrored in his changed physical appearance with his new beard and dramatic weight gain."

Al Gore won a Nobel Prize and an Oscar since 2000. That does not sound like a "lost soul" to me. Losing the election gave him the opportunity to focus world attention on the REAL problem of climate change. I have no idea why the two are separating but I don't believe it has to do with Al's political fortunes. Tina, thanks for sharing your perspective on this.

Sad to hear the Gores are no longer together. I admire Al Gore's committment to the environment. I certainly would not call it as "fanatical obsession" with "global warming."
