Al Gore Wins Oscar!

Jeff Musall
In spite of smear campaigns by the likes of Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh, Al Gore won his first Oscar at the Academy Awards In Los Angeles, in the category of "Best Documentary." The award was presented by Jerry Seinfeld and was awarded to Gore for An Inconvenient Truth . There were five nominees, all good candidates, so it was by no means a sure thing for Mr. Gore to win, even though he was favored. Now for the part you might not know: David Guggenheim made the documentary and actually won the award. Mr. Guggenheim announced that he shared the win with Al Gore.

The voice over stated that the film crew had been in New Orleans the night before the arrival of Hurricane Katrina. Seeing the destruction visited upon that city by the storm helped motivate them to join Mr. Gore in making the film. The win will surely help to crystallize support for the efforts spearheaded in "An Inconvenient Truth" around the world. The movement has began to steamroll of late, and that should be expected to continue as more people come to realize the facts that are presented in the film are just that, not a political statement.

Mr. Guggenheim, when accepting the Oscar said, "I made this film for my children." He went on and said how he was inspired by Mr. Gore to make the film, who said jokingly "My fellow Americans" but went on to a more serious note, saying "people all over the world, we need to solve the climate crisis. It's not a political issue, it's a moral issue. We have everything we need to get started, with the possible exception of the will to act. That's a renewable resource, let's renew it."

There is conjecture that the win at the Oscars will bring Mr. Gore to announce for President. He seems more likely to keep on his present course, fighting for the future of the earth. We all need to take heed and follow his lead.

Shortly after Mr. Gore won his award, Melissa Etheridge won for her song "I Need to Wake Up" from An Inconvenient Truth. Upon accepting her Oscar, Etheridge shared: "mostly, I have to thank Al Gore-for inspiring us, inspiring me, showing us that caring about the earth is not Republican or Democrat, it's not red or blue, we are all green, this is our job now, we can become the greatest generation, the generation that changed, the generation that woke up, and did something, and changed."

Please show me where Al Gore said "never fly planes again" kimmiedg1. You're making that up. Besides, when Al flies he always buys carbon offsets - so basically every flight he takes finances construction of wind farms or methane digesters that eliminate pollutants elsewhere in the country. Also, there's more to a house than size - if it's not insulated a small house can use a lot more than a large well insulated house that takes advantage of passive solar and buys renewable energy. Know what you're talking about before you throw out such baseless criticisms.

If Al Gore is this great guy who cares about the environment, then why does he fly private jets and live in HUGE houses? Why doesn't he adhere to his own sayings?

Katrina motivated Gore to do more than make the film. It also motivated him to rescue Katrina survivors and personally fly back in 2 flights to medEvac them to his home state of Tennessee in a plane he chartered.
