Al Gore's Science Illiteracy

"...'cause The Interior of the Earth is Extremely Hot, Several Million Degrees..."

Mark Whittington
Al Gore was on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien recently and was attempting to explain the utility of geothermal energy, which taps the Earth's heat to generate energy. In so doing, former Vice President Gore proved to be an ignoramus.

According to the transcript, as quoted by Hot Air's Ed Morrissey:

"It definitely is, and it's a relatively new one. People think about geothermal energy - when they think about it at all - in terms of the hot water bubbling up in some places, but two kilometers or so down in most places 'cause the interior of the earth is extremely hot, several million degrees aces there are these incredibly hot rocks, , and the crust of the earth is hot ..."

The problem is that Al Gore got the temperature of the interior of the Earth wrong by several orders of magnitude. The actual temperature of the Earth's interior is upwards to six thousand degrees Celsius. "Several million degrees" would describe the temperature of the interior of the Sun.

In other words, if Al Gore were right, the Earth would not be a planet but a star.

Usually when a public figure makes the kind of public mistake Al Gore is prone to he is laughed off the public stage by the media and is never seen or heard from again. After all, Dan Quayle, said to be an intelligent person, was ruined because he publicly misspelled "potato."

Instead Al Gore is actually taken serious in certain public policy circles. His books on the environment, filled with falsehoods and questionable assertions, are best sellers. Al Gore is a favorite guest on certain TV talk shows (the ones where they don't ask tough questions) and before Congressional hearings. Al Gore has won the Nobel Peace Prize and an Academy Award for Best Documentary.

Al Gore has rather arrogantly announced that "the science is settled" concerning global warming. This is news to actual scientists, who have ridiculed Al Gore's pronouncements as being false and misleading.

Oh, Al Gore has gotten very rich as a purveyor of global warming hysteria, being involved in a number of environmental businesses that rely on belief in environmental crisis to make money

The problem is that Al Gore can get away with gaffes that no conservative (like Sarah Palin) could get away with because he is on the politically correct side of the environmental issue. It doesn't matter that the "science" is hardly settled or that Gore is a scientific illiterate. All that matters is that the correct view of the issue be advanced, even if it is false.

I just hope someone, somewhere is able to take Owl Gore to court for his collusion in pushing his AGW hoax and potentially costing the taxpayers billions of dollars via the proposed Cap and Trade cure for this non-existant problem.

I trust that when Owl goes room temperature, he will go to Hell and discover the true meaning of "warming" and will enjoy it for eternity.

What happened to all that hottiness down thar? Someone obviously over leveraged our geothermic reserves and we are facing the imminent thermal collapse. The obvious solution is to get the Fed to print up a few million degrees and inject them into the Earth's core as quickly as possible. If the planet doesn't qualify as "Too Big to Fail," what does?

The rule of "Publik Skoolz" seems to be: He who can, does, she who cannot, teaches, and she who cannot teach, teaches the teachers!". Given this reality, nobody should be surprised what quackery bears the name of "science" today, whether with Climate change, medicine and healthcare, government-funded space exploration with NASA, etc.

I suppose that we should be surprised--and thankful--that there are people who are intelligent enough to see this for what it is

And Quayle spelled it Potatoe because he was reading from a spelling list prepared by the classroom teacher. So the teacher got it wrong. I recently was in my local junior high. On the wall were spelling words. One was "murmer". The teacher meant "murmur". So we'll have a whole classroom full of kids who can't spell murmur because their teacher can't spell murmur. Pathetic.

I'm surprised, and pleased, at the lack of defense for Al, as well as the lack of claims that everyone posting is on the Big Oil dole, because don't you know that unless you believe in the global warming crisis, you're on the payroll of Big Oil?

    Ka-ching!

I can forgive nonscientist algore, he knows not what he says about science. But lately it appears he has been entirely misled by unscrupulous climate scientists who colluded to make global warming appear to be a problem when, in fact, it doesn't exist. Al's just trying to make a buck like the rest of us. Too bad he picked a losing horse.

Al Gore, and the "Global warming nee 'climate change" acolytes may indeed be scientific illiterates. However, it mayy be Al Gore KNEW that the temperature of the Earth's interior was in the thousands, not the millions of degrees, and that he made a false statement deliberately for dramatic effect, much like most of his statements regarding purported or imagined climate predictions.

He might well be lying here, for purposes of creating support for a more 'apocalytic" vision of Earth's environment, as he does everywhere else!

We must try to forgive Al Gore for his errant math. He is a politician after all, and his brain just doesn't recognize numbers smaller than millions. Heck, even that's a stretch. They're more comfortable throwing around trillions.
