Al Sharpton Attacks New York Post Cartoon Linking Obama to Dead Chimp

Robert Dougherty
The New York Post is not known to be a newspaper friendly to liberals and Democrats. Owned by Rupert Murdoch, the New York Post is known as a second cousin to the more prestigious, and liberal friendly, New York Times. As such, people may not be all that surprised that the New York Post has a cartoon out that may be a bit denigrating to Barack Obama. At the very least, that's how Al Sharpton is taking it.

Thanks to the New York Post cartoon, Al Sharpton will get to return to the cameras for a few days, to say that the New York Post called Obama a chimp.

The cartoon in question is a parody of the recent "Travis the Chimp" attack in Stamford, Connecticut. Two days ago, the former TV monkey brutally attacked a woman, forcing police to shoot the monkey dead.

The New York Post connects the chimp attack to Obama, by drawing two cops standing over the corpse of the chimp and saying "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."

The cartoon's imagery is disturbing enough on its own, with the chimp lying dead, blood coming out of it, and a cop with a smoking gun. Parodying the Travis the Chimp attack may be too soon as it is, since the attacked woman is still in critical condition and fighting for her life.

But Al Sharpton now has fodder to say that Obama was the shot chimp in the New York Post cartoon. Chimp, of course, is one of the many racial slurs that can be used against African-Americans. Al Sharpton's ears are sensitive enough to point them out, as he does time and again. This time, he may have a case.

Obama is never mentioned by name in the cartoon, with no direct mention that he represents the dead chimp. But the stimulus bill line is enough of an implication. Since the New York Post is conservative, and conservative anger towards the stimulus bill is high and wide, the conclusion is easy to make.

And if Obama is supposed to be Travis the Chimp in the analogy, then the fact that the chimp is dead makes it all the more easier to make even harsher implications. Al Sharpton won't have any trouble making it look like the cartoonist wishes for Obama's death.

A New York magazine already got in trouble for Obama cartoons before the election, when the New Yorker put out a cover with the Obamas as terrorist stereotypes. The cartoon was meant for satire on the right-wing's most hysterical charges about Obama, but it did more harm than good on that end.

The New York Post has no comment yet, nor has the cartoonist, Sean Delonas, said anything.

First, most often, the one who cries racism is they themselves the racist.

Now on to the heart of the matter...

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

It seems to me that both sides are equally provided rights in this matter.

-The NYT published a cartoon, for better or for worse, with good intention or bad. This is their right.

-The NAACP and others have interpreted this publication to harbor racist views whether it intended to or not and now are protesting said publication (mentioned above as a right)

Where the line must be drawn is on the subject of double standards. Example: Bush pictured as a monkey in hundereds if not thousands of political cartoons for 8 years - not racism. Obama (presumably) pictured as the same monkey - racist

I can see the logic in both perspectives. It is clear that the cartoon was directed toward the president and is completel inappropriate. However, I am a believer that their are way more important things for me to concern myself with that some satirical cartoon that is really just an opinion(maybe shared by many with similiar views ad ideologies. If I don't agree with your view, I just don't support it--period. For those that don't agree with the post for allowing cartoon to be published, don't by the paper. And onw more thing, who cares what white america feels about black america? Don't give anyone that much power. Just make sure my check is right at the end of the week. Holla!

I find it telling that Mr. Sharpton is MORE UPSET about a cartoon (in bad taste, sure, but political cartoons are notorious for sparing NO ONE in their attacks on sensibilities of all kinds!) than the TRAGIC mauling victim at the center of the REAL NEWS.

Why do these particular 'leaders' have to jump into the spotlight at the worst times and for the most ridiculous in order to play the race card??

One last thing: Obama's an American President now, and FAIR GAME for every political cartoonist, pundit, journalist and SNL skit writer to lampoon, harpoon and buffoon (know it's not a real verb, but it works), now as in the past. It's been this way for EVERYONE, every ethnicity, and becoming super-sensitive 'just because' the current President happens to be black is pathetic. Grow a thicker skin, and get over it!

Is Al Sharpton a racism police officer? I never hear anything positive from him. Alays dwelling on the negitive. I remember people comparing Bush to a chimp and no one had a problem with that.

who ever wrote this article is racist too.

And yes tee17, you have the right to be offended by most anything you want. It's just not very respectable or manly. I was actually offended by Attorney General Holder's comments that America is cowardly when it comes to race. I could "easily" construe that it was blatant slam on white Americans for only pretending to accept black people during the work week, but ignoring their cultures or ways during my free time. But you know what - you won't see any White American's crying over this story, rather the only ones that will speak up will be liberal sympathizers that join the criticism. How many black families have come to my house to learn more about me? But I'm supposed to spend my free time getting interested in their lives and customs. That's not very fair, now is it?

That check that some of you are talking about that's coming in the mail.... it's MY money that I've already paid. There is no way to SEND IT BACK. But I actually wish there was... unfortunately, only the people with morals and values would send the money back. The rest are victims with entitlement attitudes. Lost your job - the government & taxpayers need to pay my way... ran your business into the ground - the government and taxpayers need to save me... live in a disaster area and didn't have insurance - the government and taxpayers need to get me a new house. It NEVER ends. And I DON'T have ANY problems with BLACK people, only people who CRY everytime something is assumed to have been insinuated. It's a "crybaby" attitude. Stop being so open to being HURT over every little thing, get over it, pull up your boots and move on to things that matter.

  • tee17 2/19/2009

Fedup, you just have a problem with black people admit it. If I feel offended I don't need for you to tell me I am wrong for the way I feel. If someone had offended you by race or anything that you do, I would not step on your feelings. Because you can not relate to soo many issue thatbwe have to face day to day because of our skin color you need not to say a word. (Oh return your check when you receive it in the mail.)
