Al Sharpton Fights Paris Hilton's Release

Lorraine Hayden
This morning the Associated Press is reporting that the Reverend Al Sharpton has found another high profile cause to fight. This time he is taking on spoiled socialite Paris Hilton. Like many Americans, he is upset over her early release from jail. He has plans to meet with LA County Sheriff Lee Baca on Monday.

The Reverend has stated he does feel sorry for Hilton, who was said to have an unspecified medical condition. He doubts poor and minority people would have been offered the same treatment.

Reverend Sharpton goes on to say: "I think that it's both another glaring display of how race and money seem to get different treatments. There seems to be a different criminal justice system for some than others."

He will spend this weekend in Southern California helping people who feel they have been treated unfair in the judicial system.

The self proclaimed civil rights leader made national headlines with his involvement in Don Imus debacle earlier this year. Imus was fired after advertisers pulled their advertisements in response to his racially charged comments towards the Rutgers Women Basketball Team. Sharpton also took on the hip hop community over their lyrics which degrade women and the use of the "N" word.

Hilton's taste of freedom was cut short, after a judge ordered her back to court today. Paris left jail yesterday fitted with a monitoring ankle bracelet placed under mansion arrest.

The decision made by LA County Sheriff Baca to move Hilton from the jail has upset Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer, according to the Associated Press. In sentencing, Judge Sauer made it clear that Hilton was not allowed to be placed under house detention.

Hilton's lawyers are due in court at 9 am this morning, West Coast time.

I know this is an old article but I like your writing so I'm rummaging through some of your older stuff. I don't think this was a race issue I think it was a money celeb. issue. Poor little rich girl.

The LA county jails are so overcrowded and court cases so backed up that some poor ("red, yellow, black and white") get credit for full time served, after a few days and are back on the streets, driving drunk and selling crack cocaine to minors. If the police can not catch them driving under the influence or robbing to support their habits etc, they can not be charged and kept off the streets. Sure many African/Americans and poor (and sometimes not so poor) citizens have been mistreated and unfairly imprisioned and excecuted, but what a time waster for Sharpton to waste time on Hilton when there are people on death row that could use his concentrated effort to get their wrongful convictions overturned.

Better to help the innocent on death row than to waste time on this.

also, thanks for the dish on Miss Hilton. I usually get my news on the tube, but lately have had no time to watch tv, excellent piece. :) hey did you hear. Nicole Richie is rumored to be preggers!!!!

Al Sharpton needs to mind his own business or find a "real" cause to fight for.

I also don't feel sorry for her. Paris may say she is being treated unfairly - but "unfair" is putting innocent people at risk while driving drunk. I just pray she learns something from all this instead of having a bad attitude and feeling picked on.

Lorraine, I was cracking up about your comments on another Paris article - I am glad to see maybe some justice is being served. DUI is a serious matter and with Hollywood you'd think it was on the level of jaywalking.
