Alabama Football Update: Top Recruits for 2010

New Developments for the Tide in 2010

Saban and Co. have done it again as The University of Alabama lands another five star recruit in defensive back Keenan Allen. He joins fellow star recruits DeMarcus Milliner, John Fulton, Jarrick Williams and Nick Perry to make up one of the strongest groups of freshman defensive backs in college football. These young players will do a great job adding depth to Alabama's already talented defensive secondary. Look for Milliner and Allen to make an impact early on; Saban has already shown he is not even a little afraid to play a freshman if they are deserving of the spot.

Another player on the defensive side of the field to be excited about is monstrous defensive end Adrian Hubbard. Listed by Rivals.com as 6'7" and 227 pounds, I can only imagine that the Alabama coaching staff is salivating at the idea of having such a versatile athlete to work with. Hubbard's size makes him a force to be reckoned with at the line and his closing speed (rumored to run a sub 4.5 forty) adds to his ability to put pressure on the quarterback. He also shows great patience in play action situations and against the run. Predictably he tends to tackle a bit high but at 6'7" this is hard to avoid.

Joining Hubbard in the freakishly tall category is tight end prospect Brian Vogler. Also listed by Rivals.com at 6'7", Vogler hopes bring a balanced style of play to the tight end position. With the departure of NFL prospect Colin Peek, look for Vogler to fight for playing time early on in his career, seeing as though other Bama tight ends (Brad Smelley is particular) have proven to be inconsistent at times.

One big surprise has already occurred this year as QB / ATH Blake Sims (not to be confused with Phillip Sims, Alabama's other big name QB recruit) announced that he will consider other college options. This comes as sad news to many who were hoping the Tide could finally pull in a solid duel threat quarterback. The roster is still laden with athletes and former high school QBs who could easily be inserted for wildcat type plays if the coaching staff wants to change things up, but this is a highly unlikely scenario.

BJ Scott was an effective scrambler at Vigor HS in Mobile Alabama during his prep years and could easily be inserted for wildcat type plays if the opportunity presents itself - Star Jackson is not exactly slow either so this may not be as big of a loss as many think.
