The Do the Reuse Challenge began in September 2010. For an entire month people across the nation accepted challenges and used tickers to track their progress. In 30 days 11,337 bottles and cups avoided landfill, 438.6 pounds were lost, and $42,040 was saved. The event was such a success that the makers decided to keep it going.
"What the Do the Reuse Challenge illustrated is that making a difference doesn't have to be difficult - it's as simple as choosing to drink your coffee or water from a reusable cup every day," Jenn Ottele, PMI's Aladdin Marketing Manager, explained. "Knowing we can make an impact with one small change to our daily routine is incredibly empowering. Imagine what we could do if we all did the reuse?"
So how exactly did the concept for Do the Reuse Challenge come about? The Aladdin company has been making lifestyle products for quite some time. As a team they realized that even the smallest things like coffee in their favorite mug, brown bagging their lunch, or having whatever in reusable cup made a big difference and saved them money.
And so the Do the Reuse Challenge was born.
If the aforementioned stats aren't enough to convince you then think about this: seven million barrels of oil are used to produce the amount of water bottles that Americans go through in one year. That is a lot of waste in a landfill and even more money lost.
What about coffee? Unless we change our habits there will be about 23 million paper coffee cups thrown out by 2010. By changing your habits you don't need to sacrifice your daily coffee, you just need to make it at home. Compare the numbers: it takes about $165 a year to make coffee at home while it can cost you $636 to buy coffee from the local café. The same goes for food, brown bagging your lunch not only saves you money it also keeps you and the environment healthy.
Even small changes such as the ones mentioned above make a big difference in the green living world. If you would like to partake in a challenge and track your progress visit DoTheReuseChallenge.com
