Alanis Morissette: Flavors of Entanglement is Abstract Album

The Reviewer
Alanis Morissette is one of the best-known and well-regarded artists in all of music. On her seventh studio album, Alanis is back with a brand new sound. The album mixes Alanis' trademark sound with an almost-organic techno. Will the new sound lead to success on Flavors of Entanglement?

The album opens with Citizen of the Planet. The song is definitely very different sounding. The song has an abstract feel going into the chorus which is much heavier in a rock sense.

Torch is a very solid ballad which has definite single potential. The song is very catchy and melodic. Alanis' voice works well with all of the minimalist elements found within the track.

Underneath is a much more commercial song than most of the album. The song is much more upbeat than most of the album and is a surefire hit for Alanis.

Straightjacket follows the darker theme of the album. The song features blistering synths and an almost euro-pop feel. The chorus is much more upbeat however the theme of the track is much darker.

Not As We is another solid ballad with an almost haunting vocal delivery. The song features a simple piano riff which lets Alanis shine vocally.

In Praise of the Vulnerable Man is another different sounding song sonically. The song like Underneath is happier in nature. The song is interesting to listen to and the lyrics are not what you expect from Alanis.

Moratorium is another dark and haunting song. The song has an up-beat drum and bass heavy beat with a slower and more melodic string section and vocal arrangement.

Tapes is a solid mid-tempo track. The song is lyrically and melodically strong and the song will appeal to a variety of audiences. The song might be the most memorable on the whole album.

Giggling Again For No Reason is one of the most interesting sounding tracks on the album musically. The song is not what you expect from Alanis at all. The song is very dance and club friendly.

The album closes with Incomplete. The song is the perfect way to sum up the whole effort. The song is a guitar heavy mid-tempo track which is solid lyrically and melodically.

Flavors of Entanglement is a very abstract album. The music found on the disc is definitely outside of the box; yet if you are into different sounds and elements in music, this might be for you. Overall, Flavors of Entanglement gets 7.5 out of 10. If you are a fan of Alanis Morissette make sure you pick up her latest album Flavors of Entanglement.
