Marijuana is a drug that singers can admit to without public backlash
Alanis Morissette smokes pot and refers to it as "medical marijuana." The marijuana plant is used for medical purposes in 13 of the United States as reported at NORML. Marijuana has been known to treat such diseases as AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, Crohn's Disease and pain, among other ailments. Harder drugs, like morphine, are also used for medical purposes. However, when a celebrity admits that they use harder drugs, they are either considered a drug addict in need of help, or they are in need of a drug intervention. Celebrities such as Whitney Houston have used both marijuana and harder drugs. The singer was caught at the airport with marijuana on her possession earlier in the decade, but she didn't face harsh scrutiny until her crack cocaine use was revealed. If Alanis Morissette smokes pot, fans can see that she is not on the verge of collapsing. In fact, given the fact that she is now an avid runner, fans can see that she looks healthier now than she has ever looked.
Marijuana has a long history with singers and members of bands
Marijuana is used for medicinal purposes in 13 states. However, it is a drug that is enormously popular for recreation, especially among singers and band members. Groups, such as NORML, a nonprofit, public-interest lobby that seeks to see marijuana laws against the drug abolished, echo the opinions of some people in the public who don't have a problem with marijuana.
The use of marijuana has been promoted to its fans by groups like the Grateful Dead who were supported by a hippie culture. Depending on a singer's image, marijuana use would provoke little to no reaction from the public. When Alanis Morissette smokes pot, her image as a natural woman who likes to run and who participates in a vegan lifestyle supports the natural woman/hippie image.

Post a CommentGreat article. Marijuana is not a big deal unless it leads to something worse. I thought she smoked years ago, but never knew for sure.
Good for her!!! America needs to legalize marijuana.... give me a break... marijuana is more natural than alcohol.. once the US goverment figures out how to tax it good it will be legal.. TRUST ME!
Can't say I think this is such a big deal, unless it starts interferring with her life.
I say good for her! I don't think pot should cause much of a ruckus anyway anymore. Nice reporting Jolie!
So long as it does not impair her (or endanger anyone else) I see no logical reason to object .... 'morality' for its own sake is subjective and often self-righteous.
good write up on this. However, I hope that with more usage, and the slow acceptance of it as a treatment, if too many people claim its for medical reasons, then talk about partying, they will hurt the cause.
I don't care what she smokes myself, it's her business but, FYI, I once read in a book about taking care of your singing voice that smoking one joint was equivalent to smoking a whole pack of cigarettes.
My sister calls Alanis the angry rocker chic, maybe she will mellow a little if she is stoned.
