Alaska Cruise Vacations - Smaller Ships Are Great Bargains

Deborah Scofield
When many people hear about Alaska-cruise-vacations, they likely think of a 2000-passenger packed ship, 7 or 8 stories tall. Shopping malls, casinos, and cinema houses might be something that comes to mind. That's partly true. In addition to Alaska cruise vacations that have all the previously noted features, numerous other cruising possibilities exist.

Smaller ships, rather than huge cruise liners, are the travel option of choice for many Alaska-cruise-vacations. In comparison, these are often much more economical and memorable. It simply depends on what you have to spend and the kind of experience you want to have. Each of these kinds of Alaska cruise vacations has something special to offer. If money is no object, you might want to consider Alaskan cruise packages on a luxury liner. But if you want to be more economical and at the same time get close to nature, then an Alaska cruise on a smaller vessel is probably what you want.

Alaska cruise vacations on smaller ships will give you a very special experience with lots more personal attention. They allow you to sail close to shore so you can see all the wildlife up close. The smaller ships have access to smaller docks, unlike the bigger ships which are prohibited because of their size. On shore trips are included in the basic charge with these kinds of Alaskan cruise packages. Needless to say, smaller ships don't have the casinos and shopping centers. But if you'd enjoy a more romantic vacation with personalized service, try one of the smaller vessels that offer Alaska cruise tours.

Of course, Alaska cruise vacations aboard a large cruise ship will cost a lot more. You'll be deprived of the opportunity to get a close view of the wildlife. The most you can look forward to is seeing is some bald eagles and perhaps a few humpback whales. Alaska cruise packages on the big ships don't include onshore excursions, so you'll have to pay extra for these kinds of things. It might not be obvious till you get the final bill. You will realize that all the little things added up to be a large cost.

That said, Alaska cruise vacations on the large ocean liners are definitely more luxurious and offer more amenities. They have all the facilities that come to mind, including casinos, gyms, cinemas, discos, shopping - to name just a few. There are swimming pools on the ship, and you may also request a private deck and lounge. So it depends on the things you hope to see and do during your Alaska cruise vacation.

People who take Alaska cruise tours will find that the smaller ships allow them to reach places that they have no hope of ever visiting if they had chosen a big ship. The smaller ships only allow about 100 passengers and therefore get filled quickly, whereas the big cruise ships hold around 2000 people at a time. So it's always smart to book as early as possible when planning Alaskan cruise vacations.
