Passport
Although Alaska is a part of the United States you still have to cross Canada in order to get to Alaska. There used to be a time when you did not need a passport to go to Canada from the United States, but those times are over with. Now you need a government issued passport to travel to Canada. So make sure you have your passport on you if you are planning on driving from the United States to Alaska. You will be stopped at the Canadian border, and you will be made to turn around if you do not have your passport on you.
Criminal Record
Another thing to know is that if you have a criminal record then you will not be able to cross into the Canadian border. They will check records before allowing you to cross into Canada. Even if you have a DUI you will not be allowed into their country. You can drive from the United States through Canada to Alaska if you are a criminal. You are not allowed.
Pets
Many people like to bring their pets with them on trips. If you want to bring your cat or dog with you that is fine. However, Canada does have some requirements that you must meet in order for that to happen. Your pet must have current proof of their rabies vaccination. So make sure that your pets shots are up to date and that you have proof when you are traveling through the United States - Canadian borders from Alaska or to Alaska.
Driving in Alaska
When you finally get to Alaska there are some things you need to know about driving there. Road can be dangerous sometimes with the weather there. A good Alaska travel tip is to call 511. Calling 511 will tell you what the current road conditions are for any state road that you are on. You can also go online at http://511.alaska.gov for that information as well.
