Album Review: Rock N Roll Jesus

Mandy Kaye
Kid Rock: An infamous country soul rock-and-roll cowboy from Detroit, Rock City. Kid Rock has gotten more negative publicity than praise. Other than his hometown, support seemed to dwindle. Even thus being so, he made his way to the top and into the lives of the rich and famous. Sealing his way into stardom and the tabloids with his marriage to so-hot super model Pamela Anderson. He has been criticized for having nothing to say. But he's back again, and you better listen to what he's preaching.

Rock N Roll Jesus at a first glance seems to be degrading and disrespectful, or even blasphemous. Is this Cocky all over again? There is a related theme of religion throughout this new album. But he is not bashing it or making fun of it. He admits he's not a saint but knows what's right.

Amen, for example, is an acoustic sounding anthem with meaning, criticism, and piano. "I'll tell you sometimes people, I don't know what's worse, natural disasters or these wolves in sheep clothes pastors. Now damn it I'm scared to send my children to church." This song shows feeling and maturity, something we're not used to seeing from Kid Rock.

But Kid Rock hasn't gotten "too old to kid or too soft to rock". As number 12, on this new album, states "I'm a lowlife living the high-life." Proving that Kid Rock is still a devil without a cause. Kid Rock is real. He's not afraid to call it as he sees it or share with us the novelties of being a star. "And if I get high stop being so uptight."

"Number eleven seems to be a poke at ex-wife Pamela Anderson. "She's half your age and twice as hott." The first single "So Hott" is almost X-Rated and definitely humorous with lyrics like "I wanna @#$% you like I'll never see you again."

If you're looking for classic Kid Rock, this album is probably not the best place to find it. Except for a few exceptions like Sugar where he reverts back to phrases like cowboy, platinum, and the fast rhyming rap that we've come to expect from Kid Rock. And if you buy the clean version you'll be pleased to know that the censors are just as hilarious as ever. Truth is, this album is something new from Kid Rock and if you aren't from Detroit or haven't liked him before... give Rock N Roll Jesus a chance. You might just learn something. "So don't deny yourself of something good for you. Before you do it for yourself, do it for someone else. That makes it real."

I'm not a big Kid Rock fan, though I do listen to him from time to time. Thanks for the great review though! I was wondering how this album would be. Then again, maybe I will like it since I am not a fan of him lol!
