Album Review: Sarah McLachlan's Laws of Illusion

McLachlan Shatters Seven-Year Silence with 12 New Songs True to Her Roots

Kathrine Lloyd
Sarah McLachlan's much-anticipated new album "Laws of Illusion" has finally hit stores and CD players everywhere. This is the first new material for Grammy Award-winning McLachlan since 2003's double-platinum release "Afterglow". The release of "Laws of Illusion" brings Sarah McLachlan's seven-year quiet spell to an end and will include touring with the all-female lineup of the Lilith Fair music festival, of which McLachlan is the co-founder.

While being interviewed recently by Billboard.com, McLachlan expressed her reluctance to take any time away from raising her two young children and not wanting to miss anything. There's no question that Sarah McLachlan has had many changes in her personal life in recent years. In addition to becoming a mother of two, McLachlan recently went through divorce-huge adjustments for anyone. McLachlan has stated that "Laws of Illusion" is her favorite album thus far and she feels it may also be her best.

"Laws of Illusion" features twelve new songs plus a bonus track that feel like a return to the singer's roots. There are a blend of emotions represented on the album from euphoria to the shock of betrayal and the inability to grant forgiveness. "Loving You is Easy", the first single released from "Laws of Illusion", is an upbeat song about love, happiness, and possibilities. By contrast, "Forgiveness" is a song about the pain of ending a long-term relationship and the difficult emotions that accompany that process. Longtime fans of Sarah McLachlan will embrace "Laws of Illusion" with enthusiasm and recognize it as a transitional period in the singer's life.

This is not the kind of CD you are going to be tempted to blow your speakers out with. It's the kind of CD that creates a mellow and contemplative atmosphere while relaxing. The piano version of "Love Come" and "Bring on the Wonder" both harness the powerful beauty of McLachlan's voice and are likely to be fan favorites. "Laws of Illusion" definitely has a way of growing on its listener as it's revisited and familiarity grows.

McLachlan's "Law's of Illusion" was recorded with long-time collaborator and producer Pierre Marchand in Montreal and Vancouver and hit store shelves on June 15, 2010.
