ALCOHOL AWARENESS TEST - ANSWER KEY
1. E. The only thing that can sober up someone who has been drinking is time.
2. False. One reason people often get drunk at parties when they don't intend to is that they
don't realize the amount of alcohol in what they are drinking. Fruit juice and other ingredients in
punch can make it difficult to taste the alcohol at all or to tell how strong the drink is.
3. False. You have no way of knowing for sure what your BAC is. The effect of the alcohol in
your system may make you feel fine or unimpaired when you actually may be. Even a .02 blood alcohol level increases your risk of fatality in a car crash and at a .07 level, just under the legal limit, your ability to track and steer, coordination, and judgment are all impaired. This could hardly be considered "safe" by any reasonable definition of the word.
4. True. The rate of absorption of alcohol into the blood varies from person to person and can be
slightly delayed if the person has a full stomach before drinking. People can also build up tolerances to alcohol over time and become less affected, which is why an alcoholic has to keep drinking more and more in order to get drunk. This is why it is important not to drive after having any alcohol at all. Following formulas such a waiting one hour per drink are not accurate because they do not consider the weight and tolerance of the person, nor the fact that not all drinks come in standard sizes.
5. A. Many alcoholic beverages actually contain more than one drink, as defined above.
6. True. Drinking too much alcohol can cause your body to stop functioning as normal to the
extent that you choke on your own vomit, fall and injury yourself without knowing it and bleed to death, or fall into a coma and die of respiratory arrest. It also causes thousands of fatalities each year due to car crashes, some of whom were innocent passengers or other drivers.
