Alcohol Can Lead to Hair Loss

As we men get older there is something we all struggle with, the loss of hair. There are many things that can cause men to lose hair. Sometimes it's old age, sometimes it's hereditary. Sometimes the women in our lives just stress us out too much. There is one cause of hair loss you might not have thought of yet: beer.

Before anyone decides that alcohol is causing hair to fall out consider a few things first. It is completely normal for hair to shed. This happens during part of the normal hair growing process and this hair will be replaced by a new hair. When the hairs falling out are not replaced by new hairs, that is when you should worry about hair falling out.

One of the main negative effects of alcohol is that it can tamper with the amount of zinc that is made in the body. Zinc's main function is to help with several bodily processes including the reproduction of cells. If the body is not reproducing cells then the result could be that the body stops growing hair. Since alcohol can lower the amount of zinc made that could result in less hair.

Another negative effect of alcohol is that it is considered a diuretic. Diuretics are drugs that elevates the rate of urination. When drinking alcohol the amount of liquid that is released from the body is more than the amount of liquid put into the body. The result is a body that is dehydrated. When someone is dehydrated it can have an effect on the hair because the hair will become brittle and could even fall out.

Another reason that alcohol can lead to hair loss is because alcohol can lead to an increase in estrogen. An increase in estrogen will not effect women's hair but a large increase in estrogen in men can lead to hair falling out.

Always remember that there are many reasons that hair can fall out. Bad nutrition, hormonal problems or even pregnancy (for women obviously) can have an effect on hair loss. Sometimes hair loss is also just hereditary. Just because you are losing hair and happen to drink alcohol does not necessarily mean that one leads to the other. The best way to figure out if alcohol is leading to hair loss is to check with your doctor.
