We took a family day trip the other day with no other goal in mind than to spend time with eachother and not spend a fortune. We followed previously noted signs to Aldridge Botanical Gardens off of Lorna Road in Hoover, AL and were pleasantly surprised to find a hidden treasure. Over 30 acres of nature comprise this beautiful treasure that was founded in 2002. The gardens boast a serenely beautiful location to visit, walk, take pictures, or host an event. They also offer enjoyable educational summer programs for children of all ages.

Both my 2- and 4-year old were mesmerized by the turtle and frog statues, and it was adorable to watch my daughter try to feed the ducklings before she realized they were made of metal. We all enjoyed the half a mile long path around the lake. At one point, we were greeted by a pair of Canadian Geese who allowed us so close that my daughter was in shock! The azaleas and tulips were blooming in abundance and the hydrangeas will be brightening it up shortly. Fish and turtles were also out and about and easily viewed by standing on the rocks at lake's edge. The Boathouse is available for events, and was being decked out for a baby shower when we were there. The guests were to enjoy a beautiful luncheon over the water surrounded by flowers, geese and butterflies.

Also among the delights of Aldridge Gardens were gurgling waterfalls and side paths with little bridges over trickling streams. There is no end to the enjoyment a family, couple, or individual can find here. The paths were stroller friendly for moms, the path around the lake just arduous enough for the sports walker to enjoy and the beauty perfect for anyone wanting to escape the city for a moment. There is a designated picnic area in the shade if one wished to make a day trip that involved a meal, or even for local business people to use on their break.

Those wishing to become involved at the Garden can volunteer to help keep the grounds. There is also a membership which one can purchase. Membership benefits include discounts on gift shop purchases, the hydrangea sale, educational events, and more. Aldridge Gardens is a non-profit organization so donations are tax deductible. Whatever your level of involvement, be it guest or gardener, Aldridge Gardens is a beautiful place to be and one that our family will be visiting regularly through the changing seasons.
