Alec Baldwin and Thomas the Tank Engine: A Plea

Stop Talking Crazy...Tell Thomas Stories Instead

Superdork
Setting aside the questionable and erratic behavior in his personal life, to hear actor Alec Baldwin speak of paranoid conspiracies and ridiculous solutions to non-existent problems is disheartening, to me anyway. But to hear him tell the stories of Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends is certainly a treat.

A fan of the series, much like my four-year-old son, I've had the privilege to watch just about every episode ever made. Narrators over the years have been Ringo Starr, George Carlin, and currently Michael Brandon. But Alec Baldwin outshines them all in this role. He has a gift for storytelling, not just in his pleasant voice, but it seems like nature for him to become these characters and engage an audience.

I'm so disappointed that he won't be the voice of these stories anymore. I marvel at how he can make me cringe during an interview, yet bring me delight when he speaks as Sir Topham Hatt.

I am aware that Mr. Baldwin has many fine acheivements under his belt, and many causes he is passionate in supporting (some of them admirable) so it was very generous and human of him to devote those years to this children's series. I for one am very glad he did.

Alec has begun his role on the new series "30 Rock" and I hope the show does well. But I would implore him to consider returning to his finest role as Thomas the Tank Engine Storyteller, and while he's at it, to "tone down the crazy". It's a waste of a truly talented and entertaining individual.

I am a wife, and a mother of two children. These two roles are my favorite parts of being alive. I'm one of the most imperfect humans I know. And I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  View profile

  • Alec Baldwin is an entertainment genius, and a nut.
  • No one can tell Thomas the Tank Engine like Alec Baldwin!
  • While I don't agree with Alec socially and politically, I do respect (and enjoy) his talents.
Baldwin was the narrator of the Thomas the Tank Engine series from 1998-2003.

I agree. Alec Baldwin is wonderful narrating these stories. I absolutly LOVE him in Thomas and the Magic Railroad. Great article! (Nice pic of Alec, too!)

NO ONE will ever be as good as George Carlin in narrating for Thomas !

Setting aside the long history of cruelty performed by the worshipers of Jesus Christ, I enjoyed your comments about Mr. Balwin's narration.

Alec Baldwin is Mr. Conductor? Wow. I remember being a very disappointed little girl when George Carlin replaced Ringo Starr (and this was before I was a Beatles fan or a fan of dirty comedy, ultimately ending up a fan of George's as well). Is Thomas the Tank Engine still part of Shining Time Station or is it its own show now? Wow, I think I just really dated myself with this comment.

Oh, I love Thomas and the Magic Railroad! We watch it a lot. And I love Mr. Conductor!

You are so right about Alec Baldwin being the "best" Thomas narrator! Thomas is a favorite in our home and Thomas and the Magical Railroad is at the top of the list!!

This article was very well written! I remember seeing George Carlin on there when I was younger. Quite different from his stand up LOL Alec Baldwin is an amazing actor. I remember him saying he would leave the country if Bush was elected. I guess he changed him mind. But as an actor he's great. Not bad looking either ;)

I have not had the pleasure of hearing him narrate Thomas the Tank Engine. We are more of a Nickelodeon household. But he does have an amazing voice and certainly an over the top personality which all makes for good story telling. Very well written!

Personally, I think Starr was better, but Alec Baldwin knows how to narrate. Ever seen the Royal Tennenbaums?
