Cooking Up a Storm

Lee Hansen
Alex Askew has worked his way up in the culinary world. When he was just a teenager of 14 he was given an opportunity of a lifetime. Through a high school program that emphasized career advancement he was trained as a personal chef. He then worked, honing his skills for the next six years at various New York eating establishments. In 1989 he graduated from the Culinary Institute of America.

He did food research, development and consulting for large companies. Some of them included Hilton Hotels, General Mills, and Aramark Corporation.

While still improving in his chosen profession he co-founded the Black Culinarian Alliance, also known as BCA. The goal of the organization is to bring culinary awareness to people of color in the hospitality industry. Additionally it provides employment, educational, mentoring and job coaching opportunities.

Alex Askew has made guest appearances on Good Morning America, Food Network and CBS's Early Show. He has been the recipient of several awards and accolades. He received a Doctorate of Foodservice from the North American Foodservice Equipment Manufacturers. He is also a speaker and lecturer.

His desire is to share his wealth of knowledge to the up and coming young food service professionals.

It is obvious that Alex Askew is passionate about the food industry. Fortunate are those who are under his tutelage. Who knows? He may just be grooming the next food culinary star.

I, for one appreciate those who are in this field. They make the world a lot tastier. Hmm! Hmm! Good!
