Alex Rodriguez Gets 275 Million - Give Me a Break!

This week the sports world did something I thought it couldn't do. It surprised me yet again. This week Alex Rodriguez resigned with the New York Yankees. The surprise is that the Yankees will pay the slugger 275 million dollars over the next 10 years. That's over 27 million dollars a year. This is ridiculous! No athlete is worth that much.

First off, one player cannot win you a championship. We saw this during the past season. Rodriguez was not able to bring the Yankees another championship. It takes a great team to win a championship. With questionable pitching and a lack of good hitters this is something the Yankees do not currently have. To pay one athlete this much money is just crazy. If Alex doesn't want to come back to New York for a more reasonable amount, let him go! For the amount they spent, they could buy several players that would probably make them a much better baseball team. History has proven not only in baseball but other sports as well, that is takes a good team, not a great player, to win a championship.

To me this contract is a sign that there should be some cap on how much players can get paid. Don't get me wrong, I believe athletes work hard. Furthermore if you can make it to the professional ranks of any sport it means you are amongst the best at what you do. You should get paid accordingly. However you can over due it. Several of the athletes that receive such mega deals often under perform afterwords. Players are entering baseball and other professional sports with the expectation that they are going to get paid these ridiculous amounts of money to play the sport.

I understand the reasons why the Yankees made such a deal. Alex Rodriguez is a guy who is going to put fans in the seats. His high profile career will attract people to the ball park and keep people coming. You know he is going to hit homeruns which will keep you in and win many games. But isn't the ultimate goal to win the World Series. If this is what you're playing for than $275 million is just too much. Sure he's a great player and you'd like him on your team, but Rodriguez alone not win you a championship. The money would honestly be better spent on getting better starting pitching or another couple of solid hitters for your lineup.

Let me be clear. I'm not made at Alex. If the Yankees will give him the money that take it. I just wish the sports world would wake up. Paying an athlete this kind of money is not going to bring you a championship. It takes a collective group of players on the same page and jelling together to win big. The Yankees have secured their big guy, but don't expect much difference in the outcome next year. They will be competitive and probably make the playoffs. But don't expect a World Series Championship!
