Alexyss K. Tylor: Vagina Power!

An Exclusive Interview with the Controversial Author & Talk Show Host

Alexyss K. Tylor
Date of Interview: 4/25/07
Alexyss K. Tylor is on a mission to enlighten Women & Men about the importance of "Spiritual Sexuality." She proudly asserts that her degree is truly "earned from the School of Hard Knocks."

Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia she is an ordained minister following a long family tradition. After further introspection, it is clear that her strict religious upbringing and focus on the Church are a huge factor, and are at the core of her perspective on sexuality.

Last year, Ms. Tylor was on Cable Television in Atlanta, until station management and a very vocal constituent of "Black Women" protested her show and effectively got her banned. Ironically, she notes that if it were not for Black Women in New York, Los Angeles & London, her teachings would have been lost. She also credits White Women and some supportive men for demanding that her voice continue to be heard. She says; "I'm bothered and hurt" that the women she most wanted the help, were the ones that turned on her but that will not stop her from continuing to teach. Especially for the younger women's sake. She feel that young women need to learn about loving themselves and respecting their bodies.

Through it all, Alexyss says that she cannot change who she is and accepts her mission to educate her people specifically and mankind universally. She told me that "when I look in the mirror, I know that I cannot change myself. In me I see, Maya Angelou, Oprah Winfrey and Sojourner Truth who are all strong Black Women." Alexyss says that she is "working to help those that have gone through unhealthy/dysfunctional relationships either mentally, physically or sexually through her Center For Healing & Transformative Health."

I must admit that when Ms. Tylor's information was presented to me, I was a little taken a back because of the book title and her raw delivery of the subject of Sex and Sexuality. However, when the initial shock wore off, I became interested in finding out about her and the things that have inspired her thinking and ultimately her philosophies.

So, I will say in advance that if you are not open to hearing or reading about sexuality candidly, then you should probably stop reading this right now! If you are willing to explore various perspectives on life and sexuality, then my interview with Alexyss K. Tylor should definately broaden your knowledge base.

Saba, Ink: What is Spiritual Sexuality, Vagina/ Penis Power, etc?
AKT:
Women especially suffer from inferiority complexes. It is sometimes caused by the way we perceive ourselves sexually. We get caught up in our biological clock, what people think of us, looking for approval and the need for acceptance. Sometimes we are even taught to repress sexual thoughts and that the vagina is dirty and is sinful. We must understand the Power of the vagina and the penis and stand in its power.
AKT: Sexuality has to come from a same God Consciousness and a greater spirit. We cannot be ashamed of sexuality because this causes people to repressed and closeted which creates a duality and internal conflict.
Saba,Ink: How does Vagina/Penis Power apply in today's age of Sexuality? HIV/AIDS?
AKT:
Our socio--economic system is designed to encourage consumerism and sexual pleasure. Everybody is just doing what feels good to them. So people go around doing whatever they feel without accountability to the next person.
AKT: We have got to reach a higher level of sexual manifestation because right now we are using our sex organs to destroy each other. Look around you! There is homosexuality, men on the down-low, bi-sexuality, drugs, drinking all sorts of things that can only be associated with a lower level of life and sexual activity. We must begin respecting our own bodies and in doing so respect other peoples' bodies.
Saba,Ink: So are you condemning Homosexuality or alternative lifestyle choices?
AKT:
No! I'm not condemning Homosexuals, Lesbians or anyone. Let's make that very clear! What I am attacking is the shame behind the behavior/lifestyle. We are so ashamed of who we are that we cannot be honest with each other. Amongst Blacks, it is light vs. dark skinned or we are ashamed of how we screw, how we look... everything!
AKT: We can't change people but it is our responsibility to tell each other about our inner desires. We need to let our partners know our HIV status or what freaky things we are into. There is a lack of respect of our own race and those that look just like us. If you respect your partner, you would sit down with them and tell them what you like or what you do privately.
Saba,Ink: Wow, that is pretty heavy. It is like saying Do unto others.
Saba,Ink: For those that might be asking, Tell us a little bit about your Professional Background /Qualifications
AKT:
I don't have any degrees. In fact, I didn't even graduate from High School. I am currently in College and would not lie to you about having any degrees. I am an ordained Minister . I could make up my education to impress people, but somebody would dig that up and realize I was lying so basically what you see is what you get! What I am speaking about comes from my own experiences and I have a PHD in the School Of Hard Knocks.

Saba,Ink: For those that need to categorize you, would you describe yourself as a Black Dr. Ruth?
AKT: I cannot put myself in any category but I am flattered.....In High School I loved Dr. Ruth. I'd just say that I put a gentle twist on mine (laughing). I've put a southern twist to it based upon the issues that affect our community. I say that we need to go back to a spiritual approach and that's very different from religion.
AKT: Every show I did people would contact me about the issues I discussed. Whether they were gay, lesbian, straight, bi. They would tell me about their experiences and I would talk about it on the show. It was like I became a voice for them. I was saying things they wanted to hear but they just didn't have the balls to say it or they wanted me to keep them anonymous.
Saba,Ink: People don't want to let the world know what they are doing behind closed doors, right?
AKT: Well, they are being done! Religion has taught us to be silent in our pain or confusion. All the sh** we keep in our community is being told through the womb of the Black Woman and Man.
Saba,Ink: You say that A Man has a womb?
AKT:
Yes most certainly! His womb is his testicles because it is the life force that brings forth life. It is where the sperm is stored. If that life force is defiled and then placed into the womb of a woman, we can only expect Death, which is happening in our communities daily.
Saba,Ink: Wow! That is interesting and really deep. Okay let's come back a little...
Saba,Ink: Beyonce Knowles' New CD B'Day has a song entitled Kitty Kat. Listening closely to the words of the song "let's go little Kitty Kat, he don't want no more," there is a subliminal message there....It's like taking control of one's self right? Would you consider that action a form of Vagina Power?

AKT: Manipulation, and using the Vagina in a way that is ego-centered is something that a lot of women are taught. Especially if a woman comes from an abusive relationship. I hear it all the time when older women tell younger girls you don't have to work, just go to Magic City and you can make a $1,000 a night. The ego gets caught in accolades and approval and it becomes addictive. I don't think that it should be done like that, there is a much classier way to do it.
AKT: I mean the female body was built to seduce men but we don't have to take off our clothes. We can use our minds and connect on a higher level. For example, when I was looking to bring my information on other talk shows, the men especially would suggest that I wear less clothes, take my hair down or show cleavage. I would have to let them go because I am trying to present information on this subject on a higher/spiritual level so taking off my clothes would not get the point across.
Saba,Ink:You bring up a lot of valid points. How would a parent discuss these issues with their children? As an example, I wrote an article for AC entitled, One Mothers Battle With A Video Vixen, discussing how boys and girls see themselves in light of video vixens and the hyper-sexuality in music videos. What would you say?
AKT: I take the straight up approach. We only have a certain amount of time with our children so we have to take the time to groom them. Like I was in my son's room the other day and he was watching one of those videos on BET or MTV and I was like D**N those girls are beautiful. I wouldn't mind looking like that too. Whatever's in the food, give me some (laughing). I can understand how my Son would get aroused by them.
AKT: But, I have to use the opportunity to bring out my educational porn. Talk to him about what's happening and discuss the proper terms for all the parts of the body. I make him understand about the charkas of the vagina and penis. I discuss protecting himself, using a condom, and all that. I want to create an atmosphere of trust , honesty, openness so that he can talk to me. If not, we are creating sacrificial lambs and sending them out there for someone to gut and take advantage of. It becomes a cattle call of little girls.
AKT: Shielding them does not work. It just causes repression. My son is 18 years old and I remember sneaking to watch certain shows when my Mom was off to Church. People are always going to do what they feel is forbidden.
Saba,Ink: So true....
Saba,Ink: What's next for Alexyss K. Tylor?
AKT:
Well, I'm going to continue my work. Some young ladies from Spelman College have asked me to come and speak...... I am honored to be doing that.
AKT: I am working on a National Show, finishing up my books (I have so many backorders right now),
And putting them to CD so people can listen while they are working or doing other things. I want to teach women how men think. How is they are wired. That is in a series I call, finding the GOD in the DOG (laughing).
AKT: Women can't blame men for wanting to get theirs. We are co-conspirators but we have the Power to change things. We must stand in Vagina Power!
Saba,Ink: Wow! Interesting. This has truly been an enlightening conversation. I hope that I can capture your message and the truth behind your mission.
AKT: I'm sure you will...

perhaps leslie meant "enunciated"? i'm always tickled when folks correct someone else's chosen english (vernacular or dialect) only to make glaring mistakes of their own in standard english. i'm really tickled lol

if you actually listen to ms. tylor, you find that she speaks various englishes very well. she switches between them to make specific points. it's very skillful, really.

vagina power? try the power of english.

  • SS9/23/2008

I wonder if Leslie means "properly pronounced" not "properly announced."

It doesn't matter how you deliver the message, as long as the message is delivered.
